Transom repair

my mate and i recently purchased a boat off ebay for 80 GBP but there is a slight leak around the base of the transom on closer inspection the wood appears rotten what wood should i replace the old transom with it has to take a 20hp chrysler the transom at the moment is about 1.5inches thick????

hi .....welcome to i boats....

no problem on your transom.....lots of work tho......

you have many ways you can do it.......but first....lets get this moved to the restoration section where all the transom flunkies hang out !

your choices are ........

1. wood or composite.

if you go composite....it will be expencive.....but permanant.
wood properly done will last over 20 years.

the restoration section can help you with the choices and give you a step by step "how to"

btw.....depending on the type of boat.....you might be in for 40 hrs and 2-300 dollars

I used this method, it longer to remove the old wood than to mix and pour the new transom. We used an electric chainsaw, but if you can get a the transom from the back side thats a simpler way.

I think your boat is much smaller , 20hp?
You might just wanna go back with wood and glass it in place.
Search transom, lots of different ways to do it.

What kind of boat? Wood, fiberglass, aluminum???? 1 1/2" of wood is easy to achieve with 2 pieces of plywood that can be glued and screwed together. The Sea Cast link is good however it will cost more for the seacast then what you already paid for the boat!

Go with plywood and epoxy.

Try to save as much of the old transom as possible to use it as a pattern,

Get a sheet of 3/4 exterior grade ply wood, cut out 2 identical peices using the old transomas a pattern, I used a good waterproof construction glue(Gorilla glue I think) and glue the peices together, install the new peice in the boat to ensure fit and to drill all holes.

Once you have all your holes drilled, remove the transom and coat it reeally well with Thompsons water seal or similar product,paying close attention to all the hole and edges, don't cheap out here, get the good stuff.

Let it dry and reinstall and you have a new transom.

It's been my experience that Thompson's water seal is VERY temporary. Better to start with pressure treated plywood.

PT, marine or exterior grade ply.. fiberglassing both sides and the edges is the standard. you can use epoxy or poly resin. Doing this will encapsule the wood and keep the water from being able to penetrate. This will last you 20 years atleast.. waterproofing or PT alone may last you a few years..

Broken Drilled holes in Fiberglass

Broken Drilled holes in Fiberglass

Have a quick question, I have 4 drilled holes in the fiberglass of my boat where the electrical panel screws into the frame of boat. The problem that I am having is, the screw holes that are in the fiberglass of the boat have broken and I can't screw the electrical panel back into place. I tried using these plastic insert in the holes, but they did no good. Does anyone have any idea how to repair these broken holes. I even tried gluing a nut in the back of the hole, but the glue didn't hold. Would I have to re-fiberglass the holes and drill new hole or if someone had a better idea,

Sand the area and use (JB-Weld)holds like no tomorrow on fiberglass.... If you have any more questions please start a new thread

Recurring theme in here is that PT ply and aluminum are a bad combo.
