Re: Transom Replacement Cost
What is a good estimate to repair/replace the transom on a 21 ft. 1988 Four Winns.
Is it worth doing if I cannot do any of the work myself.
Boat floor and sides were replaced with marine grade materials 3 years ago.
Engine overhauled 3 years ago just before we bought it. (Saw pics and have receipts).
No problems since we bought it other than the starter needed to be replaced this summer.
If I cannot afford to fix it, would I be able to sell it as is AND if so for how much??? Your best guess please.
I would tell the buyer about the transom problem. 3 summers boating and loving it big time.
Jude: You're asking about a large 21ft I/O fiberglass boat transom in a small 16ft aluminum OB boat thread, 2 totally different types of boats.
If the transom needs replaced, there may be further damage, even if 'only' 3yrs old. You will probably be removing a portion of that 3yr old deck (or sole, but not really a floor) that was replaced, and possibly the side panels (if they are resting on the deck, they may have to come off to remove the deck)...........
Start a thread about your 4Winns, post some pix of your boat. You'll get a few opinions. Here's mine:
It's a 1988 boat, that's 25yrs old. It may be a great boat, but it's still a 25yr old boat. Unless you WANT to work on a boat, I doubt you'll find much motivation for doing the transom repair. It isn't easy, its labor intensive & will take a good long while. It will take you several months of weekends & nites to pull this boat apart & put it back together. It will likely cost you several thousand dollars to accomplish your goal.
If there were no problems other then a starter, why does the transom need to be replaced. Good to go boats, that have had adequate repairs of the deck, should have included a thorough inspection of the transom. Most boats this age, that need 'some' transom or deck repairs, need much more work then originally expected.....
