Transom replacement HIN???

I'm doing a "baby step" rejuventation on my 1972 16' Starcraft Supersport. (It's too cherry to completely restore....wife's grandfather kept it pristine) Anyway my question is this: When replacing the transom what is the proper procedure to deal with the engraved HIN in the stock transom? Defacing a HIN is against the law so surely removing it entirely will not be looked upon kindly, right?

Also, while I'm on the topic, I've learned that many people use fiberglass to "glue" the transom together and then cover the entire assembly in glass. I'm attempting to replace the panels on the insides of the gunwales, dash panels, gas can cover panels and a few other pieces with sealed, stained, glossy red oak. Is it possible/permissable/safe to construct the transom out of wood and NOT paint/glass the transom, just seal with polyurethane and polish it? I think that'd REALLY pop with the rest of the boat's wood theme.

Thanks guys!

Ayuh,... You should be replacin' the wood, from Inside the hull...
The outer skin of the transom isn't defaced, which includes the hin...

Btw,... Poly'ed red oak ain't gonna last very long...

Welcome to iboats half!

Bondo has ya pretty well set up there^^^^.

You don't happen to have a couple of photos of what you are working on do ya? That would help the cause too.

I suppose it's a good thing it's still attached to the boat because I'm already in over my head before I started!

The one thing I've learned that hasn't turned out to be misleading or completely incorrect is that the more I learn about the mechanics of a boat the more there is to know. Back to the drawing board.

Thanks for saving my keester...

Re: Transom replacement HIN???

Ok, read all weekend about transom replacement and have some gaps...

How does one go about removing the hundreds of fasteners on the aft of the gunwales holding them to the transom? What type of fasteners are they? Rivets? How do you remove them? How do you replace them when buttoning up the finished project?

I don't mean to be a bother but after hours of searching I keep reading "there's hundreds of transom replacement threads on here" and they usually read something like this:

1. Here's my moldy transom.
2. Here's my new cutout.
3. (Question about epoxy/poly/glass matting)
4. Here it is installed.

I'm just not able to piece together a few gaps in stories, that's all. Thanks again, fellers!

Hundreds?? Seriously? Have ya got some photos of that transom?

Check out my Jet Star project, I tried to be detailed about my transom removal. Photos and all - should give ya what you need.

Re: Transom replacement HIN???

There should only be like 10-20 bolts through the transom and then a whole bunch of screws under the splashwell.

Re: Transom replacement HIN???

The rivets I'm referring to are holding the gunwale to the transom skin. I must just be dense on this topic and/or not understanding something VERY basic so here we go...does the wooden portion of the transom slide in behind the outer skin without removing said skin? I'm lost and I don't know why....thanks guys!

Also my camera is MIA or I'd be posting pics...
