Re: Transom replacement on my 12' Sears tinny

So I just finished washing the inside and outside transom skin of the boat so I can paint tomorrow. My wood transom braces are drying from their final coats of spar. I realized last night that the metal brace I have for the outboard has only two holes in it as opposed to the three holes I have in my transom skin and wood transom. My options then as I see them are:
1. redo my wood transom braces without the third hole in the middle
2. drill a hole in the inside piece of the wood brace so I can put the nut in it below the surface of the wood.
3. Drill a hole in my metal brace

I am leaning toward the second option. Any reasons not to?

Here is a picture of the brace and transom skin (the hole in question is the top middle one):

I don't know for sure but I think the ears on that metal piece are supposed to be up. Is it nearly as wide as the spread on those 3 holes thru the hull. The only 1 I've ever held is only @10" wide I think.

Should be SS screws to hold it to the transom wood, under where the transom clamps for the motor tighten & bear down on the transom. Use the 5200 to seal the hole & the screw threads. Run the screws into the slightly filled w 5200 hole, back out, coat threads & reinstall to tight.

Okay. So I need to go back to Ace, exchange my regular nuts for nylock ones, and buy some screws too. While I am at it, I purchase 1" washers instead of 1/2" ones for extra support but now I am thinking I may want the smaller ones so I am not taking up a bunch of surface area where I may need to screw in that bracket. Thoughts?

If you get 5200 on the threads then there is no need for nyloc nuts which are over priced. That transom will not fall apart and the 5200 will absolutely keep the nuts in place.

Re: Transom replacement on my 12' Sears tinny

So I have primed the area I brushed and am ready to install the wood transom. Here's my question: I would like to take it out on the water tomorrow or Saturday. Should I install it with the 5200 and take it out without being completely dry (as little as overnight to dry), or should I install it without the 5200, use it for the weekend, take it off and let it dry out and reinstall with 5200? I won't be able to work on it further today until 8:00.

Re: Transom replacement on my 12' Sears tinny

check the label or 3M's website, but I think 5200 is rated to be applied UNDER water....

if you are worried about transom wood moving while 5200 is not completely cured, that's slightly different, but 5200 has pretty high tack when 1st applied.

but confirm the wet spec before taking my word for it....

but the more time you give it, the better.....

If you apply the 5200 tonight and launch the boat tomorrow it will still be wet but you will be fine. It will still cure. ANY contact with the 5200 and it will come off on things that touch it such as your fingers. But if it on bolts and such you will be fine. It acually uses moisture to cure.

I have used it on garboard plugs and launched 5 hrs later w/o leaks and it still cured.

+1. It's good stuff. A little gooey, but cleans up with a bit of acetone. They do make a "fast cure" version too, if you can find it. I even found some in black the other day for folks who want/need it.

I just asked a question that was already answered at the beginning of this thread. I am too tired but, psyched to almost be done!

I'd put the washer on the bolt, and apply 5200 to the bolt. Carefully pass bolt thru transom plywood, rotate it as you insert it, like your hand tightening it, and continue to rotate bolt until it's fully inserted. Hold the washer & bolt head tight to the plywood and clean some of the threads off the other end of the bolt with acetone. Put washer, then the nut onto the bolt screw threads and tighten it to snug.

Then try to clean the 5200 off of you, the tools, the transom plywood, the bolt, etc etc etc:p

Wow am I really going to need acetone to wipe of the bolt with the 5200 that fresh? I figured it would just wipe off with a wet rag. Am I going to need to soak my wrench and socket on acetone after this?

I've never seen you use 5200 on a bolt, install it, then thread on a nut, so I don't know ;)

You have no idea how sticky that stuff is. Might want to read Brer Rabbit.... Yeah, it's sticky alright

Do not soak your socket wrench in acetone. Never the rotating ratchet head anyway. It maybe a cawl & ball bearing style that needs the very little grease that's present, to remain.

Yah, I happen to like Mineral Spirits a little better than Acetone to clean up 5200 around fittings/bolts. It seems to give a more smooth finish to it (doesn't evaporate as fast).

If it gets on a smooth surface - have plenty of rags and carfully wide it away like a paint drip ;) Messy stuff!

So I mention to my wife that I have to run to Home Depot, again, and guess what she finds?

That's the brand most of you all use right? ;) Saves me a trip, Win!

Well it does say Extra Strength:facepalm:

Look around if you can. Acetone from wally world is cheaper here by the gallon. But a small mom & pop hardware place here sells a gallon for $4 cheaper then wally world. Same blue & gold manufacturer :)

The added fragrance in nail polish remover is just a little extra bonus....

NO PIX allowed using that acetone though, don't want a man card violation on your record:eek:

Re: Transom replacement on my 12' Sears tinny

Done! Did not even need the acetone (used some rubber gloves and it wiped right off with a dry rag). Here's a pic with the finished product and motor mounted. I will have to take a couple without the motor but I was too excited to take them first. As you can see, the transom bracket I posted earlier will not fit with where the bolts come through. Oh well. I am now having some issues with the motor which I need some help on (it won't turn), but I started a new thread for that in the Merc section. Here is the link: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=570468&p=3916753&posted=1#post3916753

Thanks for all your help with the transom! I think it looks great!
