So the transom looks good, my boy was in town and I got him to heave that hog up on the back of the Starcraft.
175 lbs. I was ready to use the cherry picker if he had not been around.
Emotions are listed as anxious.
Want to get her on the water.

Hi everybody.
I put her in the water Saturday. Here's what I learned:
She may be a bit tail heavy. First "run" was a little wierd. Changed the trim on the motor to lowest and got happy real fast.
With me alone in the boat and a 5 gallon jug of water in the bow, and a motor that I wont run over half throttle (break in) -
sitting on the rear plank seat - gradual throttle roll - she tilts up, climbing out of the hole and the bow drops down to a very nice level.
Plane speed is at 24-25 which takes half throttle.
The wind picked up a few times Saturday and I got a chance to see what rough water felt like. She did fine at cutting through the white caps.
Nothing huge but it brought back memories from my teens in my Grandfathers skiff on Lake Ponchatrain in Louisiana,
Rough water was the norm.

The biggest aggrivation was a vibration coming from what looks like a loose bond between the aluminum gunnell and the alum side of the boat.
I'm figuring to pump a little 5200 up there to quiet things down.

Everyone has said it would fly on the water and I suppose that the old saying rings true,
"if 50 people tell you you're drunk, its time to sit down" - taking guesses on top end !
I am curious what she will do with the rest of the power band hat has yet to be introduced.
You can bet it will be on a lake of glass.

I would also use a rivet or two when trying to get rid of the rattle.

Looks like the motor might be able to be raised a little. Might help keep the nose down. 24 /25 sounds high for planing speed.

Congrats on a good Splash.

Thanks. The plane speed does seem high at 24-25 and I'm thinking that things would be improved if I move my keester forward a bit.
It may me that what I am calling plane speed is just the lowest bow position (which is where i wanted it to be).
Perhaps if I move forward, the "plane speed" will come down some. Oh well, time will tell.
Not gonna be able to play with her for a couple weeks at least.

Not sure you if you could go on a diet to ease up on the stern weight after seeing this pic.

Top speed guessing, oh boy one of my favorites.. I say 36 and that it will be frightening at first. .

Watermann - You made me laugh out loud. I get it totally. The bottom line is that the pic is of my son who weighs in at 170. I'm at 155 soaking wet.
At least he had the muscles to wrestle the yamaha up to the transom.
Dreaming of a tiller extension and a spot to sit on closer to the middle of the boat.

Gonefishin - Thanks for the complement. I just cant get my head around 36mph. 36 is the top speed of my 19 ft Cobia bow rider. Prefer speeds that are a little less than that.

Good news - bad news - too soon to tell.

64Osby - The upper right section of this pic shows where the vibration was coming from.
If you see that small rivet on the rail, in front of the corner brace - the space towards the bow from that rivet is where it "wails like a siren" .
The rivet seems tight as a tick and I am hesitant popping another rivet - as its right at eye level.
Still leaning towards the 5200.

Oh yeah that's right PC, sorry about the mix up, you're only 100 Lbs lighter than me is all so I would have to be in the bow.

36 is fast for a light tinny with a tiller, one wrong move on the handle and... Although I felt the same way about the Chief at first when at WOT up around 50 MPH, well beyond the hulls design but when stronger than new it's not a worry.

Wedge a synthetic shim (carpenter) up in the space and see what happens.

So whats up with the HP rating on the hull listed at 40?? What kind of disaster would be in the mix with 40 horses behind that boat?
Sure, it may be a shaft rating for 1965 but I have to think that the 3 knee braces are the entire reason that the 40 was listed as max,
Right now I am at 62% of maximum rated HP. SOunds low but feels high!

64Osby - please offer more detail on the synthetic shim idea. Are you thinking about using a shim made from a thick plastic jug
(like from a cascade dishwashing liquid bottle) or is there some shelf item available somewhere that I am unaware of?
I recall an engineer friend that had a old ford diesel truck that had an awful vibration in the roof of the cab. 2 layers if steel, he drilled a hole from below and shot a generous blob of foam insulation thru the hole and problem solved.

Thanks guys

Not sure the 5200 idea would work, that stuff is so darn runny. If it were me I would try killing the vibration by pushing a thin strip of rubber into the seam with a putty knife.
