When I took my 115hp Johnson in to be repaired because the tilt/trim was leaking down, the mechanic told me the o rings were shot, because I had been using a motor brace or transom saver. He told me never to use one, I should always use the motor lock. Has anyone ever heard this before, I thought using one was the best thing to do.

Re: TRANSOM SAVER

I hope that isnt the case. In my experience it has not been a problem. My boat is 6 years old & has had a transom saver on it since it left the dealership.I havent had any problems with my tilt/trim.

Re: TRANSOM SAVER

Hi Bassin51,

I have been using a "transom saver" on my boat for 24 years and that's the first time I've ever heard that comment, both the motors I've had on this boat have power trim and I have never experienced any problems. My opinion is the transom saver does not protect transom but is there to take the load of the motor and any bouncing of the OB leg off the hydraulics and seals of the power trim. Most engines nowadays, the support bar on them is relatively flimsy or only supports one side and usually raises the engine so high it is almost horizontal with the boat, in some cases causing messy oil and fuel leaks under the cowl.

Bob

When you lower your motor onto the transom saver, how much preasure do you apply. Do you stop the engine, as soon as it makes contact with the brace?

Re: TRANSOM SAVER

Perhaps this is incorrect, but it has always worked for me. I lower the motor until the transom saver is making contact with the trailer, then give it one quick "hit" to give a little tension. I like the motor to be able to turn back and forth (side to side) relatively easily. If I can't move the motor, it's way too tight. However, I don't want it so loose where to motor can turn to one side. I would think that damage could be done to the T&T system if it were real tight and you hit a pothole or something.
