Transom Savers

I have an old 1960 Johnson 40hp Super Sea-Horse and went looking for a transom saver the other day. Luckily I caught the small print on the boxes. Every one I looked at said only for use with a motor that has power tilt/trim. I do not. Will they still work, or is there one out there for older motors?<br /><br />Matt

I use one on my '58 Johnson 35hp. I didn't even read the box. It seems to be working just fine, and I can't see any real reason not to use it. It braces the engine up and takes the load off it.<br /><br />Our engines are practically identical. I'd much rather trailer with the transom saver than use the slow screw in pin that holds the engine up for trailering.<br /><br />Just get a good solid one, and you should be fine. There's not all that much weight to hold up, as you can see by manually lifting the motor while it's on the transom. Just my opinion, of course.

The ones with the built-in cushion or spring should work on non-hydraulic-cushion engines, Matt.

I bought mine a couple years ago to use with a 20 hp motor (no power trim/tilt) that I couldn't tow in the down position.<br /><br /> transom saver <br /><br />I was concerned by the fine print when I got it, but found that it works fine. The only thing I had to do was cut down the length of the adjustable bar with a hack saw bar to be usable with my motor, it was way too long. Now it holds it at about a 45 degree angle.

I used a transom saver on an 85hp without power tilt for an entire season. I had a Swivel-eze bolt on model just like they sell here. It has a bracket that bolts directly to the trailer but is removable with a pin. It attaches to the lower unit with a thick bungee cord. I would go with the bolt on model to ensure the transom saver stays put when you go over a big bump!

I've used one on an 85 model 35hp Merc without power tilt for years. No problem just get a good fit and installation and you'll be fine.
