This might seem silly but in the OMC I/O, do you have to remove the entire stern drive to replace the transom seal, aka bellows?

Well.....it is somewhat "silly" because it's hard to tell what you're asking.... ..... in the picture below for a 1987 OMC King Cobra #66 is the transom "Seal"........#76 is the "Bellows"

To replace the "Seal" one must remove the drive, engine and transom mount in that order.

To replace the Bellows, one need only remove the drive.

You didn't say which OMC you have. I cannot say for a "Stringer".

This is a 1976 OMC 165 made by GM straight 6. It is in a 1977 Crestliner Norsman II. So Bellows and Transom Seal are not the same thing?

Probably not. Also, you have I believe a stringer (or the precursor to the stringer) that uses a rubber boot? I think they may also call it a "seal" (that may be the one that sinks the boat if it gets a hole in it....)

There's a lot of people here that do the older OMC drives. Someone should jump right in here on that....

You also might want to get a service manual if you want to do any of the maintenance on it. I don't know where you'd get parts. I think Sierra might still have parts for OMC that old. NAPA also does Sierra.

For OMC stringer the lower unit must be removed from the intermediate to replace the diaphragm/boot/seal/rubber round thing. Yep...

Re: Transom Seal

Listen i did mine didn't have to remove nothing.

Just get the right one. How many holes you got 16 or 22. This site might have it, e-basic power has it.

Good silacone. Permetex makes some real good stuff grey something.

I just used marine silacone. I know i spell badly.

Yes get the manual, original best, seloc second best, 1964-1986 is the one you want. Not claymor.

Good luck!
