Transom Separating under Alum Trim - Motor Mount Cracking

Hello All:

I have what I believe to be a serious problem. Hopefully someone can dispell this as being serious however.

It seems that the transom (If I understand correctly that the transom is simply the back plate on the hull??) on my 16' Chaparral is separating from the transom deck?? (Area on the back where the upper thru-hull motor mount bolts and plate are located). Unfortunately, the damage was done before I could stop it, and what seems to be happening is that the bolts have begun to pull right through this area... resulting is the rear portion of the transom deck (if I have that terminology correct... I think i may also be called the splashwell??) to crack on both the starboard and port sides of the engine. If left, I'm sure it will get to the point where the entire area around the metal plate and bolts is going to just rip right off, and consequently take the transom with it! Considering I just rebuild my engine... this would be cause to become very very depressed!!!

Anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this? Do I need to remove the transom as a whole and literally mold a new transom deck around the motor mount area? Can that area just be sozzled out and re-glassed in? Would that be strong enough? Could it be reenforced somehow following that type of repair to prevent a future occurence? Just how much work am I looking at?

Also, what would cause something like that to happen. The transom itself appears to be in great condition, no signs of rotting, cracking, or otherwise? Just seperating from that deck portion....

Thanks in advance!!
Ben

tap on the inside of the transom with a hammer to see it the wood is rotten on the inside..good wood will have a solid sound.. rotten will have a dull or hollow sound... sounds like u have a rotten transom if its pulling apart

Thanks starbuck. I'll do that as soon as I get a free evening.

My question at this point is, if it is the transom that's rotting out... is this something better done by a fiberglass repair shop to err on the side of caution and ensuring the job is done properly? Also, if my boat is rated for a 90HP, could said shop make the transom stronger so that I could overpower the boat, say to a 110 or something?

you can replace it yourself.. i have replaced the one in my 76 model baja.. and am replacing the one in the 74 starbuck right now.. originally the starback had 2 layers of 3/4" plywood in the transom.. i'm replacing it with 3 layers and adding knee braces to strenghten the transombecause i am gonna hang a 200 evinrude on it
