The transom looks like it's been reinforced. Looks like when they did that the splashwell does not drain, at all. Thoughts?

Either that or they just replaced the wood behind the plate, Or poured Seacast and then placed the plate. Either way they SHOULD have placed a drain tube for the Splashwell. You can STILL do that relatively easily. Buy one of these right here on iBoats...

Drill an oversized hole, completely fill it will Fiberglass Peanut Butter, then re-drill to the size needed for the drain tube and install the tube using some 3M 4200.

If you REALLY want to keep the Boat and you REALLY want to ensure that it is Safe and Sound you should do a thorough inspection of the transom to ensure that it is NOT rotten and that it will support the motor safely and that you and your passengers will not be in the middle of the lake on a SINKING BOAT!!!!

I'm just sayin...:D

I'm a little nervous(and inexperienced) with drilling thru the plate and the transom. How horrible of an idea would it be to drill a hole in the bottom of the transom and plug the hole, and have that plug out when the boat's out of the water?

That's just somthing you have to remember....we've all forgot the drain plug at least once. Glad we have the bilge pump in working order, but you're talking about the splashwell drain not the bilge drain right?

Re: Transom/Splashwell

Ok, let me restate this. I do NOT think your boat is SAFE! That Plate was NOT put on there to make your boat PRETTY. It was to cover up a problem that the PO did NOT want to fix the right way. If you do NOT investigate this the right way you MIGHT be putting you and your Passengers in DANGER!

But that IS just MY OPINION!!!

I'm just sayin...:D

Re: Transom/Splashwell

If you drill through the bottom of splashwell to get water to fall below you'll be amazed how much water comes over your splashwell! Every time I stop, slow down quickly or go into reverse gallons comes over mine. You'd be running your bilge pump constantly. Replacing transom is a lot less work than saving drowning family/friends! Then there's swimming back to shore & all.

Re: Transom/Splashwell

check your transom as everyone is stating. I plan on putting a plate like this
before I re-install my motor after my rebuild. so I will have a new transom and the
stainless plate for support. just sayin check out the transom for rotted wood first.
