Having everything bonded together would be great, but in the normal build process nothing is used to bond the floor to the stringers, some builders do it, but its not the rule. I would rather glue than screw (I don't like the holes) and companies that do bond it down typically use a polyester based product, so while it sticks OK, its not a great glue.

I haven't compared 5200 and other adhesives like it to PL head to head, but I have used many of the PL products and they appear to work fairly well. If polyester is used and is expected to hold things together, I would imagine PL would do at least as good, if not better.

Plexus would be great, but like you said, can be difficult to find.

5/8 ply would be a little thick for a 14' boat, 1/2 would be fine.

Thanks for that Ondarvr!! The only reason I was thinking of 5/8" is that the deck that was in there was real flimsy and the stringers are more than a a foot apart.....that, and from the hull sides to the stringer is more than a foot.......Just don't want that from my own resto......maybe I'll go 1/2". I still have time to decide, I still have all my grinding to do......then the transom.

I put 3/4" floors in both my projects (little but larger boats). I don't like 1/2". Too springy. I think 5/8" would be ideal for yours. Just my opinion though.

I tend to agree, ezombee. 1/2" does seem springy. I'm thinking I'll end up going 5/8".

Thanks Erik! I'm not entirely sure exactly what to be concerned about and to what extent, since I'm inexperienced at this AND owning a boat. The fact of leaving the deck seperate from the stringers so that the hull can flex makes sense to me. BUT!!! Making the whole boat into one piece makes complete sense to me as well.
It's a small boat....14'....so I guess what I'm trying to weigh is this; considering the size of the boat, would it last fine if I only PL the deck to the stringers? It's not like I'm going to be hard on the boat.....mainly gonna be used for fishing on small lakes. And it's also not like I need it to last another 40-50 years like it already has.

The hull will not Flex that much on a 14 footer. I agree. For your application It probably wont matter if you bonded your deck to stringer or not.

The Only thing I would be worried about is you cant actually glass the underside of the deck to the stringers... your only putting a thin coat of whatever product ( Filler or PL ) to make a complete one piece "hard" structure.

If you wanted to bond this..use a Flexible agent. Otherwise You could end up with a very irritable " noise " as failed putty moves around .

Again..personally.. I think glassing your deck properly is all you need.

Remember another thing about using a 2 part filler.. You better make sure you can apply it..and have time to lay your deck down " squarely " on the stringers. IF you need to move it a bit here and there you could cause voids in the filler.

Hey strt,

By the time you Resin and Glass that 5/8 ply you will have an overall thickness of 3/4" and she will be "Non Flex" I have re-thought the Deck gluing and I would NOT recommend that you attempt to glue it down to the stringers. It IS only 14 ft and you will NOT be going into HEAVY SEAS so I do NOT think you need to worry about the structural issues. I would just make sure that your tabbing to the hull sides is good and solid and watertight and call her good.

Thanks Doc and Wood! You both have very valuable points for me to consider. We're just coming into winter now, so I have lots of time to decide. The boat won't be seeing water for about 6 months so...............think I can get this project completed in 6 months?

I think 6 months should Give you enough time to complete..and have time to drink margaritas on the beach of Brazil for another 4 .

Well, I haven't made much progress in the last few days. Got some grinding done. But, what I'm most pleased about is the fact that my neighbour is a carpenter. Got all the wood for my stringers (fir), deck and transom GIVEN to me today.....FREE!! I am so stoked. So, that motivated me to grind some more tonight and make a cardboard template for the new transom. Got it traced onto a sheet of plywood..maybe I'll get it cut out tomorrow.

Anywhooo..........just a lil update for ya.

Vacuum sealing process for the DIY's. I just completed it and it really does the job. There are pictures of my clamping process also. Look about a 3rd the way down the page.

Quickie--Did I miss something??In the pics.it looks like the top of the transom is short of the top of outside hull--Or is there a master plan in the works.Grinding glass and itching is Gods way of saying--this is what we get for not buying a new boat. One of my happiest days was when "That" was over.You'er looking good!!

Yeah, the one layer is a little short. It's just the way it ended up after trimming and dry fitting many times. I'm not too worried, I'll glass it all and bring it up to snuff before I put the transom cap on.

Here's one to think on--with all the conversation over what to attach the deck to stringers with--when I ripped my deck up I found it was held in places with NAILS from the factory!! Bare in mind it's a 1976 boat--But 34 years of service ain't nothing to snear at either.

WOW! Nails?? But you do raise a very good point. I have no idea how old my boat is, but it's old. And it lasted this long. So, in my opinion, anything I do to it it will out last the factory. I think I'm going to use PL Premium and stainless screws to fasten the deck to the stringers...(this should spark a bunch more conversation I bet). It's not like I need it to last another 50 years..hell, I'm not even gonna last another 50...

There is no reason for your application to tie your deck to your stringers m8..

In fact..it might hurt.

Your SS screws will do nothing for structural..

As long as you tab your deck to the hull I dont think anything else is required... ( screwing into your stringers where you cannot water tight those fasteners could end up being a fail point ).
