I have a 1977 Johnson and a 1978 Evinrude. The 78 has a good tilt/trim unit so I want to put it on my 1977. The tilt trim does not fit the bracket. My question is will my swivel bracket from the 1978 fit the 1977? I sure don't want to take it apart and find it does not fit. Thanks in advance.

Duh! They are 70 horse power motors. 70EL77S and 70EL78C The part numbers are different on the swivel bracket but I am hoping they still fit.

The problem is with that swivel bracket. The 78 bracket has a place to attached the tilt arm and has two wear pads so that the two trim rams have something to push against. Not found on your 77. So, you will definitely take the engine apart to change the swivel brackets. I'd be concerned about the switch only due to the fact that the engines use different part number steering arms. That could affect the compatibility of the swivel brackets. Maybe an expert knows...

Unless someone can give me a definite I will just stick to the old manual tilt. Thanks for the help!

OK I am really a rookie at asking these questions. I am not wanting to just use the swivel bracket. I am wanting to use the whole transom bracket. Does that change things?

The bottom end is the big difference. Earlier ones used a horse-shoe type deal, while later ones use two separate motor mounts. You would have to figure out if the swivel tube from the later model will fit into the lower mount of the earlier one. I believe upper mounts are more or less the same on both. In either case, you'll need to do some extensive teardown to swap stuff around, so you might as well swap the entire mid-sections between the two and be done with it.
