transom thickness to motor size

I know a guy (not to smart) but he knows it all about anything, you know the type I mean. anyway he just bought a small runabout I think a Caribbean brand about 13 foot. It had a 40hp Chrysler on it, the transom is sound but it is a 70's model fiber glass boat. any way the transom is only about 50 mm thick (going off memory guess work here). The 40 looked a good size for the boat I told him 65 - 70 hp would probably be about the max id put on it. But as it has now turned out he has gone and bought a 135hp Evinrude to bolt on:confused:. It goes on this weekend coming.. any thoughts on what will happen. I thought the motor will rip the transom off on transport ( not smart enough to buy a transom saver) or when he opens it up it will crack the hell out of the transom. The twit will be taking his 14 year old son out as well, hopefully he leaves his 10 year old at home.

love to hear what you guy think would happen to it

Hi Toey77.

No worries about strength. The 135, will sink him at the launching ramp.

From my memory those old boats had a max of about 50/60 hp.

If he even gets the 135 in gear and going, he will probably flip.

What a dope the guy is.

Suggest you change your mates.

Paul.

Re: transom thickness to motor size

i would love to go and watch the lake test run though...

another brainy thing he done was when he got the boat his son hoped in and said the steering wasn't working, so he told his son it would be fine once it got in the water. lmao

13' anything with a 135??? Geeez, take the video camera with you when you go to the lake. Tell him to go ahead and take it for a test run while you wait at the dock. Youtube will love it. Oh and make sure he wears his PFD.

Here's a few pic's of the PO's result of putting a Rude 135 on a boat that was rated for 90HP. Bad for him, great for me.;)

Maybe you too will be able to get a great deal on a new motor.:D

PS, Thanks to Woodenglass's Sticky for teaching how to put pics in the text.

Re: transom thickness to motor size

I have a 1961 14' Runabout and it is rated for a Max of 60hp
I put a 50hp E-tec on it and had to take weight in to account
even though I had put a new transom on it. The 50hp E-tec
weighs 100 lbs more than my 1961 40hp Outboard. But that
baby fly's now...:D

1) Thread title should be changed to something more to the point, like "Dumba** wants to put 135hp OB on a 13'er!"
2) Thread should be moved to Stupid Human Tricks forum.

Hi Hoggar.
Your experience, points out how stupid this chap really is.
Glad your rig is running well for you.

ajgraz.
"DUMBA" is too kind to this guy.
As to moving the thread. Lets wait till we see some pics.

I am starting to doubt this could be a genuine post.

I have been building and repairing boats since I was 14, about 1967.
I have never heard of anything this stupid in that time.

Hey 64Osby,

Dude, resize your pics to 640x480. You can use MS Paint to do that. The Forum likes the pics to be that size.

I'm just sayin...:D

Yeah, You read that, but for some reason the serve STOPPED doing that so now YOU have to do it. It's really not hard to do or you can photobucket em. Up to you.

Re: transom thickness to motor size

You're not serious, right? That transom in those pics looks rotten to the core and the engine's just waiting for an excuse to fall off. It almost looks like the transom's already cracking and I'll honestly be surprised if the motor and boat make the trip to the lake still attached......provided the lake isn't right across the street from where the pics were taken.

Cannondale,
You're not serious, right?

That is not the boat in question.

I was just showing what a 135 could do to the boat in question. Yes on this one it ripped a hole inward and pulled the top of the transom outward. This boat was rated at 90Hp.

Re: transom thickness to motor size

Just a thought guys.

If this boat actually FLOATS and gets under POWER.

We are all going to look really silly.

I feel pretty safe, but stranger things have happened.

Paul.
