How do you determine proper length to buy? I've been told just to measure from attachment point to attachment point. Is this correct?

Ya, most have a buckle in the middle that you snap down to lock it in place. Most have about 8 inches of extra play in them. Makes it easier to hook them to each point when they are loose. Make sure the ones you buy have an extra piece of backing material that keeps the buckle or ratchet from scratching your boat.

Just measure from point to point and choose one that can be pulled out a little further.

I've seen them at home depot but I would get a pair made for marine use, so the metal doesn't corrode. Don't get them too narrow either. iboats, Walmart etc.
