Transom too thick. Now what?

I'm trying to mount a 1976 Johnson 85hp to a 1991 Bayliner capri. The transom on the boat is too thick for the outboard. Transom looks to be about 2 3/4" or 2 7/8" and the outboard mount is about 2 1/2".
There is a piece of plastic trim across the transom, do you think removing it might help?
Not sure if you can see in the picture, but the little lip on the front of the motor mount doesn't quite make it over the edge.

The mount does not need to be over that edge - the clamps are bolted to the transom. Judge your motor height by the relation between the AV plate and the bottom of the boat. Lots of posts here on that. More often than not, the clamps will ride a little above the top of the transom.

Got it. Thought the lip had to sit over the transom edge. Thanks.
