Hello all..

This is a cleaned up version of this thread:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=292530

1997 3.0LX Alpha 1 Gen 2

When running above 4300rpm, boat is making a screeching/rubbing/growl noise from the back transom area. At 4000 - 4300, it only does it while turning from side to side. Exactly when you touch the steering wheel, it makes the sound.

We've run with the hatch up, had my mechanic stick his head all in there, and he cannot figure out where exactly it is coming from or what the heck it is. It is coming from the rear of the motor, but not in the motor. Drivelive/transom area.

Purchased the boat last year, and did a dumdum and didn't check the bellows. They were cracked and leaking bad, and as such the gimbal bearing was rusted and shot. Replaced the gimbal bearing, and obviously checked engine alignment when doing so. U joints were fine, however. All bellows replaced. Shaft lubed up, everything put back together. Changed out drive fluid and it was a little old and dark, but not overly smelly and had no water in it at all. Looked fine.

Sound was there before the gimbal replacement, but at a higher rpm. Since then, it has not gotten any worse, but is happening at a lower and lower RPM. Used to be only at WOT/4600, now it's at 3/4 throttle and 4000rpm.

As per Dons' advice, I took off the power steering belt to make sure that it wasn't power steering pressure related. The noise is still there.

So, we are leaning possibly to some kind of carrier bearing in the upper unit? Any suggestions?

did you ever change the ujoints? they can look great but have rust where you cant see them. They are 12 bucks to so why not.

That's going to be the next step I think regardless. If the gimbal took on enough water to rust like that, seems like the u joints could use to be replaced as well.

12 a piece 24 total and free shipping. Jim hall is the guy I use

The only problem with those is that they are greasable joints, and will need the drive removed and to be greased up every 100 hours. OEM Merc joints were permalube style which didn't require the same maintenance. Just the labor for pulling that drive once pays for the right parts to go in not to mention the hassle and worry..

labor for pulling the drive is free if you have a 5/8's socket and a 3 dollar gasket set. You have to pull it any ways onces a year to check alignment

True, but I like having the right parts in there. Just the PITA alone of yanking the outdrive multiple times a year is worth the extra $100.

Also, I use my boat 5 days a week almost year round for wakeskating and cooler filling/draining.. She gets 50 hours a month easy. If I had to lube those suckers every 100 hours I'd be kicking myself.
