Transom Water Pipe, should I replace?

Like mentioned earlier, it appears your swivel shaft is leaking. I'd pull the transom housing off the boat and change the transom seal and give everything a good look over. You don't want any surprises after it's all put back together.

That's the upper bolt in the bell housing no? That has all been replaced by the PO. The steering is tight and there is no play.

Myself, if I bought a 26 year old boat and never seen it float, and had the motor out, I would make damn sure that transom housing was leak free before putting the motor back in. You could always put the drive back on and take it to a boat ramp with no engine, for a look/see.

For sure a good idea. Just fab up some covers for the top of the Y pipe just incase. That's one of the real problems with I/Os vs outboards. Too many places to leak water from.

You know I looked at the transom plate again closely this evening. It appears (you can see it in the pic above) that some water at one point possibly leaked around where the exhaust Y pipe meets the transom plate. I see there is an exhaust gasket in the above diagram. If I pull the 4 bolts that hold the Y pipe, is it just that gasket that seals it??

Yes. #12 on the gimbal hsg diagram. p/n 41802. https://www.iboats.com/shop/mercury-seal-41802.html. I believe the bolts torque back up to 25-30 ft. lb. Dab a little gray anti-seize on the threads. You'll know why after you bust them loose.

Also on a side note, this is my pet peeve with projects... They are a hole and you just start tunneling and finding more things.. lol

I think all the extra monopoly money lying around to pay someone else to do the work disappeared in a black hole, so it's DIY or window shop for an extended period for a lot of people for certain things.

Famous last words I'd be wary of saying, there's a bolt lying around the corner that is rusty waiting to snap or drop something that's impossible to grab without undoing a ton of things.

If I didn't think I'd be able to confidently do the work to a reasonable level, I wouldn't be doing it and I certainly would not be on these forums asking and learning.
