Transom wood replacement question

So I went ahead and bought the Sanpan from my previous post. It is in fair shape and paid next to nothing for it.

Bit of detail to explain the question. The toon came with a 35 hp Johnson which I will most likely sell. I have a 110 and a 70 HP. I am thinking about putting the 110 on the pontoon. The question is if I replace the old wood which is showing age with new Marine ply and laminate it together would this be strong enough for the 110? I am also thinking about replacing it with 4 pieces 3/8 thick 5052 aluminum. Would this be overkill?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

how is the current transom set up?
is it weak now, is the old motor still on it?
if so see how much the transom flexes when you move the motor up and down.

What is the max rated HP for the boat? I would replace the wood with wood. Marine plywood would be strong enough but is the transom (Motor Pod) strong enough?

I have pulled the 35 already. There is not plate on the toon to show what it is rated for. As I understand it the CG doesn't require one on any boat over 20 feet. The pod is 1/4 to 3/8 think aluminum depening on the piece. I am a bubba 265# and I can stand and jump on it and it doesn't move. I don't know the exact weight of the boat but ruff guess according a worksheet I found online it should be able to have a 150. I plan on taking it to the gravel pit to get a weight this weekend then I can calculate the max HP for sure.

It doesn't work that way with a pontoon. You need to contact Godfrey and find out what the max rated HP is for your toon.

My toon is rated for a max 150hp but they have a sport model that adds some reinforcement and then she can handle a 225hp.

You should never exceed the max rated HP. You can get fined for it. If you are ever in an accident even if it is the other boat's fault an attorney will eat you alive for over powering your boat. Not saying it won't handle it but many of the 80's boats were rated for 75 and 90hp max. The motor itself weighs more than you do and you have to factor in all the stress of pushing your toon through the water.
