I would say, "bad". My '88 doesn't have any. You need to be sure the underlying structure is sound.

Re: Transon stress cracks Normal or Bad

I have done alot of research over the past few days and I have talked to a few local boat owners. I brought up what I have found and my concerns about the stress cracks in my tansom with the dealer I am buying the boat from. The boat is still there because he is shrink wrapping it and storing it for me for the winter. Basically what I have found is that stress cracks are normal and specially for an older boat. He showed me a 2009 boat with stress cracks and told me that my stress cracks do not effect the integrity of my hull at all. My stress cracks matches a few pictures I have seen in my investigation (spider stress cracks in the gel coat). I am feeling much better about them now, although, I may do something about them since I found a site that tells me how to fix them. I may live with this cosmetic flaw my first year out. I took some pictures of them, I may post them here once I get them off my phone if the pictures are good.

Spider cracks in the gelcoat wasn't what I was envisioning from the title of your thread. However, spider cracks could indicate an underlying problem, but maybe not. This boat has a much heavier than original motor on it IIRC (Merc 135?) with more than capacity-rated HP. You still need to make sure the transom is completely sound.

With all due respect, the guy selling the boat has a vested interest in convincing you there is no problem. A completely independent opinion is worth a lot more than his.

Any stress cracks or crazing are not to be taken lightly. You may want to wander over to www.fiberglassics.com go to the site map icon, then glassic concepts comes up,[takes a while] scroll down to Restoration Book part 1 [fiberglass Boat construction and repair] The heading CRAZING halfway down will give you detailed info as to why you may want to steer clear of this boat or salesman that does not know what he is talking about. I am not sure where you researched this but I use this as my bible when it comes to fiberglass restoration and research.

Sounds like Bayliners come from the factory with stress cracks...

Well my boat has been in the water all summer and just took it out. No stress cracks came back. Looks like all the work I did on the transom worked. So much for my transom being "toast"!
