Re: Transporting boat from USA to Australia

I shipped a boat from Belize South America to New Orleans USA for about 4k. It was put on a barge and taken to Belize City then loaded on a freighter to cross the gulf. I had a broker take care of all of the details including customs which was also done through a broker. that fee was only about $125 US. This was only a 21' boat. Im not sure if this helps but in comparrison yours is a much greater trip. It would have cost me about 40% less to fly out and handle the details myself but it just couldn't be done that way.

Trailable 21ft will fit into a container without problems (it's the wider hulls that cause headaches, need to slide them in on a 45 degree angle).

A mate of mine imported a 35ft scarab, total cost (shipping, customs etc) was about $25,000. That was still a significant saving over buying the scarab here from a dealer. But will you save any money with a trailable bayliner? Have you done your homework on this? Customs and quarantine is a nightmare these days, they will fumigate the container and the cleanup costs are all yours.

Grab the yellow pages and start ringing shipping brokers, some of them specialise in cars & boats from the U.S to Aus.

Aldo

Aldo, Thanks for the advice. I am just looking at present, but the prices of bayliners in the US is a lot less than here.

do a bit more searching on other brands as well,
bayliners don't exactly enjoy a good reputation.

Also, be aware that an American made trailer may not meet Australian ADR's, and therefore be unregisterable.

I've seen a show I think it was Megastructure or something like that about the exact topic. The ship was called Super Servant, the company have two of them built for just carrying boat only from coast to coast. The ship would pump water in and sinks, you drive the boat onto the ship, divers go down and fasten your boat onto the deck of the ship using brackets that are welded to the ship's deck. These bracket hold your boat in place despites rough sea. The ship pump water out and then rises and off it goes. This ship is humongous and can carry lots of boats so the shipping cost is low. Once arrive at destination port, ship take on water sinks, bracket remove, and then you drive off with your boat. They didn't show anything about the custom part though but at least you don't have to worry about getting a U.S made trailer.

Re: Transporting boat from USA to Australia

I had a 20' Bertram Moppie for sale online and a fella from Sweden took interest. He got an estimate over the phone of shipping costs from Vancouver bc to Stockholm Sweden of $3500 usd. We settled on a price and he wired me the money. He then called back 'Icecorp' international shipping and asked them to pick it up. This is where the problems began... apparently, a standard shipping container's door is 7'8" wide. The Bertram has an 8' beam and tall flat sides so it wouldn't go... even on an angle. The only option was an open container... which is 40' long. The true cost of shipping would've been over $10000 usd. He was screwed. What could I do? I ended up trying to resell it but it didn't go so I bought it back for half (and sold it again a while later).
The moral of the story is that you need to get your shipping estimates in writing before you do anything!
