Re: Trapping Problem

This has happened to me more than once, usually when we are trying to get rid of racoons eating all the sweet corn. Skunks are usuall quite calm and not afraid of much. Be calm and cover the trap with a old blanket. Wait a few mins and roll trap slowly on it's side. Wait a few mins and role it slowly upside down. Wait a few mins and uncover slowly the door. When these traps are upside down often the door will open on it's own or standing behind the door just help it slide down gently. Wait a few mins and the skunk will wander out. I have actually moved skunks in my truck with the cage covered and they did not spray.

Re: Trapping Problem

If you grab them by their tail and hold them up .... they can't spray you. I've done it dozens of times. You literally have to hold them off the ground by their tail.

Yeah, good luck.
My dad did that, and while he was walking down the driveway, it sprayed him directly in the face.

Re: Trapping Problem

What you aren't realizing is that they have to be able to lift their hind quarters up to spray. If they are in a Hav-A - Hart trap then they don't have enough room to do this. They aren't 'SUPER Critters' like some people think. They can only spray 4 or 5 feet normally. There are instances where they can spray further. Put a towel over the cage .... open it ... reach in, and grab that tail. No joke .... take it from someone who would 'test fate' as a kid, and I picked up just about every critter I could get my hands on in the Wilds of Kentucky. ;) Let's put it this way ... I'd much rather grab a skunk by the tail than to have to grab ANYTHING on a raccoon. Those suckers are the Devil himself.

Did you ever heard the story told by Jeff Foxworthy about his wife cousin who had his nipple bitten off by a raccon? :D

The story I heard was a beaver bit the nipple off. Beaver and nipple in the same sentence!!

Re: Trapping Problem

Man, I have been watchin this post for two days and can't believe that poor skunk is still stuck in a trap somewhere. All us brainiacs who have posted are still waitin for a video of "The Great Release" to see who can claim victory with their skunk knowledge.

Tashasdaddy posted early and posted correctly...let the kid do it....:p

Man, I have been watchin this post for two days

2 Days? I just posted yesterday at 4:33! Thats a bit less than 24 hours? Thats ok, I'll forgive ya :D

He called me about 10 today. Said he got some plastic, face shield and all the other stuff to protect him. However sometime last night one of the neighbors dogs must of had a bit of free time to play with the skunk. It seems as if the neighbors dog has the smell of a skunk now :D.......but thanks to the dog, the cage got rolled over, the trap door opened up, skunk left the trap and the dog got it.

Now he wants to know how long that smell will be hanging around the back of his garage. Told him a week or two or three or more :D. Asked if I could come over and help,,,,,,,,,nope I said "I got boating stuff to do" :D

Sorry guys no video, he was prepared with my camera and tripod. We had no idea that the dog would do it for us. Sorta took the fun out of it....Bummer, I wanted to see it to!........SS

Re: Trapping Problem

Well, just for the record, here's this.
Mix 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap. Soak the pooch in water and scrub with the mixture, then rinse with warm water.

Doesn't say how it works on people.

Or garages.

Re: Trapping Problem

If it were me I would set another trap....One to catch the dog. I dont like dogs running loose. The neighbor should offer to pay you for the skunk of out principle.
