No one would tell me in plain english but I did here judiciusly three diffrent times....Oh well it's done now and as the wife said "What's the worst that can happen, ya kill it?"

Best time of year to prune about anything is late Winter/early Spring, while the plant hasn't begun to grow yet.

I"ve never seen a honey suckle tree. THe honey suckle down here is a vine that will take over if you let it.

I've trimmed a honeysuckle bush by just cutting to a foot above the ground in the spring & it lived & grew.
I don't get the impression it is a fussy plant.
You may just want to trim back some of the branches to thin it out.
Not my favorite plant. Not real attractive, no fragrance & small hardly noticable flowers.
If it wasn't way in the back by the compost bin, I would have removed it.

That doesn't sound like the same plant I have.
Mine has flowers like a honeysuckle, but no smell like the vine.

If it's a bush form that you want to keep young and actively growing then cut out old leaders right at the point where they grow from the ground. Pruning higher produces fast weedy growth from the buds on the remaining lower section of the branch. You can safely prune out about a third of the branches.

Ther are many plants called Honeysuckle. Around here we pull non-native honeysuckle bushes out of the woods with a weedwrench because they are extremely invasive. Nurseries sell more attractive varieties of the same species.

I've heard 2 methods. The first says you can safely prune in any month that has an "r" in the name. The second, and the one I use, is prune "when the knife's sharp". Haven't killed anything yet.

I prune my pear and cherry tree a little late, it is too wet when the trees are dormant. The branches already have buds on them, even one or two flowers. It never seems to harm them, we had a ton of cherries and some very large pears last year.
Like everyone says, the best time is when they are dormant.

I have an uncle that is a horticulturist and when it come to pruning he alway say "You prune for a reason not for the season" in other words it does not matter when you prune. How you prune depends on what you are trying to accomplish, ie..height, fullness, .....

I have pruned trees down to a pole and they still come back. Not suggesting you DO that, but I have never had a tree or shrub die from heavy pruning.

We were told to prune honeysuckle after it blooms that way the next year you get flowers. If you prune before it flowers you kill the next years to to a certain extent. Anytime is good as long as the plants not stressed.
