Re: tri hull .boat

My experience with 16-18 ft tri hulls has been quite a bumpy ride in rough water.

while they are bumpy in choppy water, they are also safe. You probably won't take it out in choppy water in the first place, but you need to knw what to expect when you get caught in it or have ot make a short run to better water.

"Choppy water" is a relative term. Where are you boating and what kind of "choppy water" are you likely to encounter? A tri-hull can eat up small closely spaced wind chop ... larger swells, not so much. My 1st boat was an 18' tri-hull which I ran up to 25 miles offshore in the ocean. You had to pick your days and slow down when the going got rough. I eventually moved up to bigger and better sea boat, but I still pick my days and slow down when the going gets rough. 140 hp will be plenty, if that's what you meant ... 40 is not going to get it done.

Look around and see how other similar boats are powered. 40 hp doesn't sound like enough to do what you want.

My 16' tri hull is much more stable than my 15' V- hull was until it got "real" choppy, then I went back to the dock. With a 40 hp you may want to station your kids on the stern with their feet in the water kicking to help you get on plane! My 16' has a 70 hp & I can't wait to get a 115 like it came with. 40 would be ok in a small lake.

Our tri-hull deckboat came with the house. It's done well for us, but our smaller V does better in the chop. I wouldn't have chosen a tri-hull for the rough waters on Lake of The Ozarks. A small tri-hull with low power doesn't sound like a recipe for fun on the ocean.

It's also not safe to take a 30 year old 18' tri-hull with a 40 hp out in the ocean on a plane in 2-3' chop. Or any part of the combination.

Dude, an 18' foot boat with a 40hp is a no go. I would not buy this boat especially if you're going to take it out into the ocean.

The ONLY way I'd take this boat is if someone were to give it to me. Even then I'd keep the motor, put it on a 13' Boston Whaler and scrap the hull.

18' is way to big of a boat for a 40hp motor.

Hey wait a minute Ringo, don't get discouraged. My Grand Pa took us all over Mount Hope Bay with a 35 Evinrude! Yes we bounced around, thats part of boating. Years later I still get bounced all around, the boat this time? - A 21' SeaFox with 135 Johnson Ocean Pro, heavy rascal with trim tabs, the whole sha-bang. Bigger boat with more HP - more gas consumtion, The Seafox holds 113 gallons of gas, I need to take out a loan just to fill her up! And I still had to slow down when it got rough. Any boat is going to take a tremendous pounding on open water. Make sure all safety devices are present and working, always check your weather reports prior to going out, make sure all maintenance is done on your engine and essential operating systems, don't over load (passengers, gear, etc), let someone know where you're going, keep life jackets handy. You can enjoy boating with 40HP, it all depends on how much money you want to put into it! If you get passed by a center console with twin 200's you might want to spend more money.
