I want to move my boat forward on the trailer but the current winch strap position/path won't let the boat snug up the the bow stop. Is it OK to run the strap under the bow stop instead of over it? (see picture attached). I am also adding a safety chain from the bow eyebolt to the trailer.

Yep, that's how it's supposed to be done. Bow stop above the bow eye and winch strap below. This way, if you get into an accident the bow eye will jam into the bow stop and keep the boat from "launching" itself off the trailer and into your vehicle.

Looks like you need to move the bow stop up a bit.

Wow that's is good info! he could get a bracket to lift the bow stop but still think the winch is too low, now I have to look at my trailers set up all wrong.
Always something huh?

2x what fisherdan said. If you think about it, when the strap is under the roller, it's pulling the boat down onto the trailer and into the stop. When it's above, it's just pulling it forward.

I have them set up both ways. On the one with the strap under the stop, I have to actually lift the bow of the boat during loading to keep it from riding under the stop.

The other has a much more vertical bow and I am considering changing that stop to a pair of cushioned panels with an overhead loop and letting the boat land in that.

I would definitely agree with flipping your winch over.
