What is the trick to getting a 115 Mariner's flywheel off?

After I posted we went to Sears and bought a harmonic balancer puller and it still won't crack loose.

here is the proper tool for the flywheels, the manual is strictly against the wrong puller because of damage issues.

You'll need to get a mercury flywheel puller as mentioned above. I bought mine off of ebay for around $20 shipped.

Once you get it, it's as simple as removing the inner flywheel nut and threading the puller into the center of the flywheel. Then you turn the inner bolt and the flywheel pops right off.

If you don't have something to keep the flywheel from turning while you're trying to remove the nut / use the tool then you might need an extra set of hands to use a pry bar or something to hold the flywheel still.

I know it probably is not the correct way, but I used the harmonic puller from sears and after tightning the top bolt then hit the bolt on the puller and tightning more hit it again and then it popped loose. If you buy every tool spifically for each job you won't have enough money to put gas in it to enjoy the pleasure of boating. Buz

i bought my puller thinking i would probably never need it but guess what...i needed it for pulling the power head and the flywheel so get one and then charge rent to your neighbors for borrowing it. C'mon If you cant afford $25.00- $ 35.00 to do something correct and then break something you shouldn't be messing with these.

Agree. Heck of a lot cheaper than a flywheel. It makes it so easy with the proper tool. Also, don't be temped to use penetrating oil on the tapered shaft. Big no-no.

Do the math. Get the right tool.

And don't ever bang on the end of a ball bearing crankshaft.

Please tell me you're joking!!!!! If not, start looking for a service manual and saving up to buy new bearings and be ready for a strip down and rebuild.....

What does the penetrating oil do and why is it a bid no-no?

The shaft is tapered and relies on the friction between it and the flywheel to maintain a good grip and not slip and shear the key. It is NOT, contrary to uninformed opinion, the nut that locks the flywheel down. The nut merely insures good contact between the taper and the flywheel.

The flywheel puller arrived today and it took less than 5 minutes to get the flywheel off. Everything was spotless. Motor still will not start any thoughts on why?

OK, here is what my husband wants me to tell you about the boat and motor

Boat:
1994/1995
Startcraft Fishmaster 190

Motor:
1995
Mariner 115
115 HP
Model Type: ELPTO TR
SN: OG226705

Motor ran fine until my brother pulled harness apart and started rewiring the boat. The wiring he had were not what the book shows. He used the wrong diagram.

This is what my husband has from the harness as the book he has is showing:

Starter Swith is marked with the following letters:

S START YELLOW/RED WIRE

C CHOKE YELLOW/BLACK WIRE

B BATTERY RED WIRE

M MAGNETO BLACK/YELLOW WIRE

I IGNITION PURPLE WIRE

M MAGNETO GROUND BLACK WIRE

(+) FUSE BLOCK GREEN WIRE

(-) FUSE BLOCK WHITE WIRE

The + wire and - wire, does he need to add those to the starter swith?

He still has a BROWN WIRE and a BROWN/BLUE WIRE from the harness that he has no idea where they go if they go anywhere. The book shows that they are not hooked to anything.

Are there any power or ground wires that go from the starter switch to the fuse box?

The motor turns over but will not start. What is it that he's missing?
Could my brother have hurt something else by wiring it wrong and trying to start it?

Do you have the right diagram now? If not, download the service manual HERE, the password for the file is <ribforum>. You'll find the right diagram on page 2D-7.

You need to check to see if you have spark at the spark plugs. Pull the plugs out and hold them against the engine block while someone cranks the engine. If you don't have spark, then disconnect the black/yellow wires from the switchbox and check for spark again... (looks like this....)

He has spark at all 4 plugs. The warning horn is missing, would that have anything to do with keeping it from starting?
