hello i can't get the trim and tilt to operate off the switch. when i hit the up and down switch all it does is click at the relays. i isolated the trim motor and put 12 volts to it and it ran fine in both directions. any ideas. thanks in advance.
Before you go out and buy relays try this: Remove each connection and sand off the terminal then re-attach them tight.

T&T units get very picky when the slighest corrosion gets into a terminal.

Bob
a couple of more questions....are both the relays suppose to click at the same time when i hit the up/down switch or seperately. also can a relay click and still be bad. thanks again
Hi john50

While it certainly is possible, its unlikely the relays both failed at once. (if they click in both directions with no motoring) Check the feeds, grounds and terminals to the relay assembly carefully.
i pulled the junction box out and unplugged the relays and both had some corrosion. also sripped back some insulation on the 2 black wires going to the sender and they look tarnished. i think im going to redo all the wiring in the box using new terminals and wire. stand by for more questions and thanks for replying to the ones i've asked already.
Hi john50.The relays are quite inexpensive and may save you some trouble by purchasing one and trying it.If it works then you can buy the second one for the other direction. If not you can always keep it as a spare if it turns out not to be the problem.
well i changed all the terminals and replaced all the wires in the trim junction box and i still just get the clicking. i've noticed when i moved the switch either way both relays click....i would think that only one would click for each direction. am i wrong...if so i guess it's time to buy the new relays. thanks again.......john50
also can someone tell me if the trim sender is spring loaded and suppose to have free up and down movement. and last how do i test the trim sender. thanks again
hello again my fellow boaters, my trim relays arrived today and as my lucks been...it didn't do the trick. so far i've changed the wire, terminals, and relays in the trim junction box. all my trim switches check out, i put power directly to the motor and it runs fine in both directions, when i plug the motor back in all i get is the clicking and no movement. im just about ready to put the hammer to it. anything else i should check. thanks again for all the help.
John, let's start from beginning. What motor do you have?Is there a remote motor switch for trim as well as one on the control lever? What method did you use to determine switches are working? When you connected directly to trim motor did you use outside voltage source and ground to engine? Are relays making and breaking voltage only to trim motor and motor has separate ground wire?Try hooking outside voltage source to input line of relay and operate switch to see if motor makes through relay.
yes phil...i've checked all the up/down switches and they all check out. i even by-passed the switch and jumped the hot across to the blue/white and to the green/white in the junction box. still it just clicks. could the trim gauge or the trim sending unit cause any problems like this. thanks again
hello ob and thanks for responding. my motor is a 1983 evinrude 115 V4. i have three trim switches..1 on the handle and 2 remotes..1 at the console and 1 at the bow. i checked each switch by continuity and voltage. the switches seem fine. my trim motor has a blue and a green wire.i don't see any black gound wire. the trim sending unit just has 2 black wires. i put outside power to the green wire and the blue wire and the trim motor ran in one direction...i then switched the power leads and it ran in the opposite direction.
Can you hook 12 volts to input side of relay, not the control voltage from switch to see if it will click and enegize through new relays. If relays are clicking control voltage circuit is fine.Motor just not getting line voltage,or poorground to wherever motor ground leads to.The engine block I presume.
hello ob i removed one of the red feed wires to the relay and ran a wire from the positive side of battery and touched the feed terminal of the relay and nothing happens. im still trying to locate a ground wire for the trim motor. i really appreciate the help and if you like you can email me at pipfitter4@aol.com.............thanks again
Sorry about your new e-mail name John.We know relays are good.Switches are good.Switches are making control voltage to relays, hence the clicking. All we have left is line voltage to input side of relay and motor ground. If you hooked 12 volt source to input of relay to no avail, then the only thing left is motor ground. When you supply voltage to input of relay are you supplying a ground lead also or is the motor bracket itself the ground. If battery turns over starter motor then I would rule that out as weak voltage source as i believe starter would draw more. When you say nothing happens when you touched positive lead from battery to input terminal on motor after disconnecting its normal lead I assume you then actuated one of the trim switches to test motor operation.
Try This: Remove the small control wires from the coils of both solenoids and run both positive and negative from battery to the coil of only one solenoid at a time and tell us what happens.
