Trim and tilt ?

Hey guys
My Buddy has a 40hp Force motor that the trim will not go up, you can hear the rely cliking and I swaped the wires around to the rely and it will go up but not down. Is that the rely or is it something else. He said that he bought a new rely only one, I belive the motor is in the late 90s.

I have a 40 HP Force and if my memory serves me correct their should be a relay for up and a relay for down. Hope this helps.

If it's going down it should go up or vice versa,
The connections could be bad or the relay bad.
I'd get a new relay.J

classic symptoms of relay failure. they are so cheap $2-$5 that there is no reason not to replace pair. try to find the ones with a bead of glue around pastic base. Usually only $1 more and they are waterproof. No big deal if you can't find them though. You will have bigger problems than relays if your engine compartment floods with water. Check iboats, google, ebay, amazon.

i have a 125 hp with same problem however i replaced both relays and using a diagram i found on here i connected it all nice and neat. now if i straight line the battery to blue 30 it goes up fine but on green 30 it sparks and dont go down. when i reverse the wires it goes up but sparks on the green. any ideas?

if you have a 3w trim motor then you may have a short inside the motor. Because of the way 2w motors are built they are unable to have problems in just one direction. So if you have 2w then it is a short in the wiring somewhere.

i have replaced both relays, the 12v25a circuit breaker and replaced switch, replaced all wires with 12 gauge wire and supply wire to dash switch. today it finally worked a dozen times both directions then it stopped again. is it possibe the circuit breaker isnt strong enough maybe going to a 30 or 35? the trim motor has two wires coming out of it. this is a diagram i used for relay wiring anyone have any suggestions?

trim motor g and b to 30
trim up to 86
trim down to 86
ground jumpers to 85 and 87a
power to 87

one single battery wire to right post on circuit breaker
one double battery wire on left post on circuit breaker going to relay 87
all ground wires 85 and 87a(x4) bolted to engine with battery ground
