Yea,
When I showed it to the mechanic (different mechanic that replaced the gimbal bearing), he didn't think me not raising the drive caused the issue either. He had two theories:
A) As a couple of you have said, the nuts where only fingure tightened
B) Not likely, but maybe they tightened them too tight and the treaded part of the rod on the port side stripped or stress fractured the end of the rod when the bolt bottomed out at the end of the threads on the rod.
It's a mystery too me either way

I only wish, that as soon as it happened, I would have taken it back to the mechanic that last pulled the drive. But, seeing that it is over a month since the repair took place... I think it would be a hard sell to get them to fix it on their dime. What do you do... For now, I'm happy that I will be back on the water soon.
I'll post pics of the fix when complete.
