Re: Trim cylinder mounts broke

I don't know how tight the rod that connects the trim cylinders fits in an Alpha, but on my OMC Cobra, the rod fits pretty tight in there, in fact the way I get it out when I remove the drive is to tap it through with a drift or small diameter ratchet extension, and that's with greasing the rod with marine grease when I install it. It almost looks to me like 2 problems, one it looks like you have some white powedery corrosion on the mount that broke, and the other was most likely the rod not being installed right. I think it's hard to say if a repair is viable without a close up inspection. It's hard to imagine that rod coming out that easily, yes the trim rams could come off under pressure, but the rod itself, not so sure. Could some one have tampered with it?

Yea,

When I showed it to the mechanic (different mechanic that replaced the gimbal bearing), he didn't think me not raising the drive caused the issue either. He had two theories:

A) As a couple of you have said, the nuts where only fingure tightened

B) Not likely, but maybe they tightened them too tight and the treaded part of the rod on the port side stripped or stress fractured the end of the rod when the bolt bottomed out at the end of the threads on the rod.

It's a mystery too me either way  I only wish, that as soon as it happened, I would have taken it back to the mechanic that last pulled the drive. But, seeing that it is over a month since the repair took place... I think it would be a hard sell to get them to fix it on their dime. What do you do... For now, I'm happy that I will be back on the water soon.

I'll post pics of the fix when complete.

Okay, it's fixed. I went the JB Weld route and it worked great for fixing the casting! Bought a new rear pin (w/ bushings, washers, etc.) and put it all back together. Took it to the lake yesterday and everything worked perfect. I inspected everything when I pulled out and all seemed solid and sound. Haven't had a chance to take pics, but I am very satisfied with the fix.

Thanks for everyone's advice.

I spoke too soon... Took it to the lake to test it out a couple of times and there is a crack where the JB Weld joins the casting on the casing. So it is failing. :( Fishermark, I replied to your e-mail on your offer to sell me your upper casing. I'm going to take you up on that offer! :D:D More to come when I replace the casing. Not sure when I'll be able to get to it, so it may be a while before I post an update.
