trim cylinder rebuild or replace o ring

My '73 115hp leaks bad on one trim cylinder. When trimmed up fluid runs out bottom of cylinder and it trims down. It looks like on the exploded picture I have to take the ram out and disassemble it to put in o rings anyway, so would it be a good idea to replace all o rings and seals or is this just extra expense that isn't necessary? Rebuild kit is $47 compared to $2 for just o ring. And, what kind of special tool is needed to replace ram after rebuild? Does it compress the seal so it will go back into cylinder?

Re: trim cylinder rebuild or replace o ring

Steve, I would start with replacing the one oring. It is the only place mine has ever leaked. Those cylinders have an inner cylinder "liner" that will pull out after you open the end cap. The piston will stay in the liner, and may be unbolted from the rod. You can then remove the end cap from the rod, replace the oring, replace the end cap on the rod and rebolt the piston, without using the special tool to reinstall the piston.

Another tip is to fill the cylinder liner with oil before installing it into the cylinder. It saves bleeding time.
