Trim cylinder reinstall questions......

OK.....I replaced the piston seal in each of my cylinders....I am going to reattach tomorrow evening or Sat......

I understand that the pump is self bleeding and that the cylinders bleed via the bleed screws but I am looking for more detailed info...I also checked the service manual for this info.....

1) Do I need to bleed the "up" first by taking off the bleed screw at the bottom of the cylinder prior to remounting the cylinder? I am assuming the the bleed port on the botom of the cylinder would need to face up / raised and I would bleed until I got plain oil, the put the screw in, repeat for other cylinder, attach both and move to #2?

2) After everything is reattached do I lift the motor up and lock it, or do I start with it down (resting)......then bleed the "down" side by remiving the bleed screw and then run the pump down until I ge only good oil?

then I assume that I run the pump up and down.......

Then how do I tell if I have enough oil, or not enough oil?

Do I need to keep filling while doing #1 and #2 assuming that they are correct.....

Any detail and or instruction would be appreciated!!!!!

I always bleed down first then tilt it up and bleed up, remember the pump is filled in the up position

Gidds, I think you have it. Normally a filling of the resevoir will last until you have bled both cylinders completely. Then reattach them and pump up the motor and refill the resevoir.

I understand with the exception of:

1) How can you bleed the "up" with the cylinder attached? It seems to me that the cylinder would have to be removed, tilted up with bleed screw open and facing up and allow all air out of the cylinder. I dont see how you could get the air out with the cylinder attached and the bleed screw being at the lowest point of the cylinder. Seems to me, air in the mix would always float to the top and the oil would leak out.........bear in mind I'm thinking about high school physics.....no hydrolic training at all.

2) I may have incorrectly (or correctly) emptyed the cylinders by opening the bleed ports to make sure pressure was released prior to removal. I think I did it correctly. I am assuming that the pump is either low or empty now. Should I go ahead and fill it up prior to installing the cylinders for the bleeding process..........

3) Lets say I am able to bleed correctly and my T/T works......do I "top-off" the pump with the motor up or down and can you overfill?

Usually with the engine all the way up the bleed screws close enough to the top to bleed if not dropping the trailer tongue down will do it, yes fill the pump in the down position to get some fluid for bleeding but when bleed reill only when the engine is all the wat up

Gidds, You need to remove the cylinders to bleed the up screw. I turn them around and reinsert the bolt to hold 'em.

Alright folks.....I cant go to the mechanic as I am broke at the moment.

I reconnected the hoses to the cylinders. I tightended all the bleed screws. I attached the cylinders to the motor and bracket. Manually tilted the engine all the way up and flipped the manual lock (swiveling metal foot) to hold it up. loosened the "up" bleed screws, pushed the trim up button and waited (and waited, and waited) no fluid ever came out. I let down the motor and filled pump. Raised up and tried again, no fluid. Lowered engine and filled pump (was able to add a good bit of fluid).....Tried again, no fluid. But bleed screws back in and lowered.

Tried the "down" bleed screws. Took them off (of the top of the cylinder, opppsite of the ram / piston) and pressed the trim down button. Behold fluid....couple bubbles then fluid. Put screws back in. Hit trim down button again and the cylinders tightened some as if down is working. Tried the up button and nothing.

No leaking trim oil anywhere. Pump operated when either up of down buttons are pushed. Motor seems to whine at what I remember to be the same sound for a while, then it "steps up pitch", sometime it seems to sound like it is gurgling. Fill screw and o-ring are good, vent screw is in with the associated washers.

I have put in about 1.25 guarts of fluid in the pump.

I'm begging for some help!!!!!!

Is the manual release valve on the bottom of the pump screwed all the way out

Laddies,

Are you talking about the reverse lock (knurled knob) on the front of the pump or the plug on the side?

If it is the reverse lock, I have it spinned counter clockwise so that the reverse lock is engaged......

Gidds, The "up" bleed MUST face up when bleeding. You need to remove the trim cylinders from the bracket and the motor to face the screw up.

It sound like your cylinders are full of air on the up side.

I tried that------ no fluid. Should the pistons be pushed all the way in / out or does it matter. I think I am going to remove the "up" hoses and see if fuild is pump out of them (at the cylinder).....is this a good idea?

At this point, cracking the hoses cannot hurt. Be careful since a weakpoint of the cylinders is the alumunum thread where the hoses screw in.

I usually invert the cylinders, push the piston all the way in, and prefill the cylinders with oil, and then install the bottom retainer. You have less bleeding that way
