I bought a 99 VIP last year that came with a merc 4.3. The guy had repowered it with a 87 OMC 5.0(dont ask me why). Everything works but the trim gauge. It wasnt even connected. It is a Faria gauge. Does the gauge run on power or resistance? Will the 2 even work right together? I pulled the gauge and cant get the needle to budge at all. I cant find the exact gauge anywhere. Close, but not it. Is there a test for the sensor? I tried the usual electrical check of the gauge, and it didnt move.

hey chuck, the guage needs to be powered. a faria guage should work if all is connected right. the first step would be locating the trim senders wires at the back of the motor, hook an multimeter set to ohms on both wires and trim the leg up and down. the resistance should slide as the leg trims. if this is happening the sender is good. if its a trailer boat just unscrew the 2 screws holding the sender down and turn the sender slightly back and forward for the same effect. if all is good with the sender check your guage wiring, sounds kinda iffy there from what you describe. look closely at the back of the guage, the terminals wil be marked. maybe I S and G for ignition sender and ground.
