Trim Gauge Stoped Working?????

I have a 96 Johnson Ocean Pro 200hp. Has around 500 hrs. Last season the gauge worked as it should. Last trip out it stopped working. Just made another trip last weekend, still not working. The needle is on the bottom of the gague regardless of where the motor is. Need some help to trouble shoot this bad boy. All the other gagues work just fine with no issues. The motor trims up and down just like it should. This makes me think its a gague issue but not even sure how the system works. I assume there is a sender wire from the motor to the gague? A fues some place?

Thanks

Pull out the gauge and check for voltage, ground and sender (tan/white). To test the sender pull the black and tan/white, put your meter leads on these (ohms) have someone operate trim sender, should see a resistance change. Bad connections?

If you can see the top of the motor, the trim gauge is one of the most useless things on a boat. I don't have any on my boat with T 175's. The sender is just a lever operated pot on the motor ... very simple.

If you just want to make the guage work try a little PB Blaster sprayed on the shaft of the sender located on the inside port transom bracket.

Not sure where your referring to? A pic of the unit on the outboard would help tons!

Probably so.... But there is a hole with a gauge in it on the dash. May as well be fIlled with a working gauge. Where would I find the lever operated pot?

Look on the inside of the port(left) transom bracket that attaches the motor to the boat; just above the trim motor there should be a lever that moves up and down that is your trim switch. The lever is spring loaded and sometimes corrosion is on the shaft which won't let the lever move. Spray some PB Blaster on the shaft and see if it moves easily. Good luck.

Perfect! That's what I needed to know. I'll go take a look ASAP.

That was it! Fixed the issue.

Is PB Blaster safe on plastic and rubber seals? Wasnt sure how safe it was on these parts, I sprayed the bejeapers out of it. Not sure if I need to go out and clean off the excess?

Never has hurt anything when I've used it, water is going to wash most of it off anyway. Glad it worked for you; I hate having something on my boats not working whether I need them or not.:)

Me too!
We could argue all day about the value of a trim gauge. Just glad I fixed it.
Thanks for the comments and help.
