Trim Gauge

I have a trim gauge that is very jumpy. If the motor is up, then the gauge is up. However, when the motor is moved down, the gauge goes down to the bottom. There is no in-between. The gauge used to work very well, and I have come to rely on it quite a bit. When I get to a certain RPM, I know where my trim has to be in order to get the maximum speed out of my engine. <br /><br />Does anyone know what the problem might be? <br /><br />Any help would be appreciated.

I forgot to give the details about the engine:<br /><br />1989 Evinrude 120 HP

Since the gauge reacts somewhat, I'd be suspicious of the sensor on the engine. I believe its on the inside of port side mounting clamp. Find the wires and check with an ohmeter to see if the sensors resistance value is proportional to its travel. (you can move it by hand)

I recently had a similar problem with the trim guage on my Evinrude. It turned out that the sensor inside the mounting clamp (that Schematic mentioned) was getting a bit sticky - not moving smoothly. A good liberal squirt of WD40 while jiggling it around fixed the problem...

Well, there is nothing sticky about the lever. It moves very smoothly by hand. But when you move it 1/4 of an inch the gauge sinks to the bottom. I'll try some WD40 though to see if it helps. I'll also try metering it out. Thanks!
