I have a 1998 Regal Commodore 242 with a penta volvo 5.0 GL PBYC and SX-M drive.

The trim started to quit a week ago. It turns up and down with no problem but only for a few seconds and then stops. I have to wait a minute or two afterwards to get it going again for other few seconds.

I made sure there is enough oil. I also connected a straight cable (POS & NEG) to the motor itself and I did not leave the cable connected too long because the cables were getting to hot.

Is the motor going bad?

Anything to troubleshoot here?

I only left the jumper on for 2 seconds. It was too hot and making sparks.

Then I'd replace it myself....

What size "cable" are we talking here?
If too small, (14 ga or smaller) they will get hot.

But if you're heating 6 or 8 ga, the pump is defective. Either the load is too great or the motor com/brushes/windings have failed.

Without even using the jumpers the wires are pretty hot. I think they are gauge 8.

Can I buy a kit to fix the motor inside?
