I have a 1996 60 hp merc and the trim indicator is stuck on high. The tach reads 3000 rpm with the engine idling quitely. The slightest amount of throttle and it jumps above 6000 rpm. Any clues as to what to look for would be appreciated, I will be going back to the lake tommorow if there is more info I need to provide.

Re: trim indicator and tach malfunction

If the tach always did this for you it's probably on the wrong setting (on the gauge).

Re: trim indicator and tach malfunction

I've owned the boat for ten years and it always worked fine. It has been setting for the last two years. I believe I was starting to have problems with it then. I found a little square box with several wires, I think I must have replaced the rectifier before letting it set. I just put a new battery in it and it starts and runs fine. The tilt/trim works fine just the gauge is off and the tach is off by several thousand rpm. I don't know if these are individual problems or are somehow linked.
