Trim Indicator I/O

Last summer my trim indicator started acting up and upon inspection I have some bare wires and now a non working trim indicator. I have a feeling the sender has been shorted out by the bare wires. Is this a possibility? Does the lower unit have to be pulled to repair or replace the sender and also will this access the water impeller?

Yes, you have to remove the sterndrive to replace the sender, to replace the raw water pump impeller, you have to seperate the lower unit from the drives upper.
Go up to the adulst only sticky and locate service manual #6.
Here is a link to the instructions for replacing the switch and sender kit.

And everyone bad mouths Cobra. You can change the impeller and trim sender, either one in about 15 min each, without removing the any of the drive.

Thanks Don. I thought what you said was true.

I was just hoping for better news, but I figured while I have the outdrive off. I may as well replace the impeller to and maybe the bellows also. What do you think?

Thanks again.

I can live without a trim indicator. But when my impellor went south on me half way between Havasu and Laughlin, I giggled the whole 20 minutes it took me to change it out with my boat STILL IN THE WATER!!! Only with a Cobra baby.

There's nothing wrong with my impeller. I just thought since it was torn down. I may as well replace it. By the schematic page "Don" referred me to. I may as well change the bellows out too since it has been about five years since the Bellows and impeller were changed.

Rule of thumb, is 5 years for the bellows, every other year for the impeller on the Alpha I. 5 years on an impeller is really pushing it.

Yea Don I agree. The boat is never ran in sand or shallow water though so I just kept an eye on the temp gage and listened for the overheat warning buzzer. Well it's all going to be changed come spring when the boat comes out of storage.

I could care less about an OMC anything in this thread. OMC shouldn't have even been brought up.

Getting the bolt that holds the clamp over the 2 heart shaped peices of plastice can be really difficult to GET BACK ON, easy to get off though, surprisingly difficult to reinstall. Make sure the 2 peices are fit and snug together , its easiest to have someone else in the boat tugging them gently to make sure they are tight in while you try and get the clamp and bolt back in. The plastic peices are so light, they will twist whatever way the wire goes so they don't like to stay in place. Make sure you get it done right the first time or you will have a leaking sinking boat on your hands, and you will have to start the whole job over again.

Well Merc. tells us now, inspect every year, replace every other year. Here's the thing, If you take apart the drive, replace the impeller. It take just a few minutes once you seperate the upper from the lower and the damned impeller cost less than the drive oil.
