Trim indicator reading backwards. Help!

I installed a Quick Silver sending unit on my Merc 60 and a Faria trim indicator in the panel. The wires are hooked up according to the installation diagram, but the indicator reads the opposite of the motor position. I've tried everything I can think of, but the results are always the same. The gauge was supposed to be for Merc also. Anybody have any idea what might be wrong?

Sounds like the indicator may be for an OMC. Leastways thats how my OMC trim indicator acts on my Merc 200hp. Definitely backwards due to reverse resistance from the Merc units. High to low vs low to high.

:)

That's a possibility. I just wonder if there's any way to alter the signal without having to change the gauge? Thanks for the response.

Just gonna have to put up with it - too risky to try to make it work right. Could rotate gauge 180 deg. where down is up and up is down - ha.
Aggravating isn't it ??

You just have to rotate the gauge 90* If the needle moves to the right when the engine is trimmed down, turn the gauge 90* to the right. If the needle moves to the left when trimmed down, turn the gauge 90* to the left. ;)

c/6
Hooty

That doesn't have to be right either. If the needle is on the side of the gauge you will have to turn it 180* like JKW sez. You get the idea anyway.

c/6
Hooty

IM JUST GUESSING, the guage is coil with a pointer like a compass reacting to the polarity of the magnet.
try connecting the ground to a postitive pole and the lead to neg or vice versa

wajajaja: Thats what I meant by being risky. You'll have one gauge with the back shell at +12V and the rest of them ( gauge back shells ) at ground potential. Asking for a possible disaster.
My .02 F.W.I.W.

:)

Thanks for the suggestions. I almost swapped the ground wire like you suggested, but sanity prevailed and I decided to ask you guys instead. I have another trim gauge I might try it on. I'll let you know the results.
