Trim issues

My 2002 Bayliner trim gage is not operating. I just got it back from the mechanic and he tried a new gage and it still would not show if the trim was up or down. He said he tested the power going into the gage and that is fine. He said the only way to figure out what is wrong is to trace all three wires the power, signal and ground looking for some sort of defect. He noted that this would take some time and could end up costing a lot of money due to hourly rates. Does anyone have any advice/ideas on what my next step should be.

Most likely that the sensor back on the motor has gone out. Pretty easily to trouble shoot and replace.

Find the sensor and disconnect it at the harness at the back of the boat. Then put an ohm meter on it and check for functionally.

First thing I would do is find another mechanic. I have heard of trim sensors going bad and I do not even own a boat with power trim! I am not a marine mechanic but I have been a professional diesel mechanic for 18 years. If he is already giving you the "its gonna cost you" routine it seems to me he does not have the confidence to repair the problem without setting your wallet on fire. Mechanics do charge an hourly rate, and some repairs cost more than others. However this trim sensor problem is fairly common from what I have heard and seems to me he would have gone thier first. (He said he tested the gauge and it was fine, yet he replaced it anyway?) Pay him off and go somewhere else.

Thanks for the help. My mechanic said that he has tried replacing the trim sender and that did not do anything. He showed me the new gage that he had tried and it was different looking then the current one, could that be an issue.

What is the expected OHM reading once I disconnect the sender?

The ohm range on the sender should be around 10 ohms in the down position and around 167 ohms in the up position
