Good Afternoon Everyone.

That last time I had a question, you guys where right on. so here goes one more.
I have a 1990 Caliber 1 21 foot open bow, MerCruiser 5.7 Engine Ser # 0D425365, Alpha One Ser # 0D419313. I took it to a local boat shop to have the Trim Position and Trim Limit Switches replaced, as my Trim Indicator gage was not working, but the out drive trim up and down switch on the control lever work just right, and the limit switch work right stopping the up about 1/4 up. the trailer up switch work right, taking it to full up position. Now after replacement the Trim Indicator gage works great, the trailer up switch works just like it did, now the problem, the trip up and down switch on the controller, with the drive in the full down position, The switch will not move the drive up until I bump it up with the trailer switch, then I can move it up or down with the Trip switch, as long as I don't go back to full down, then I need to bump it back up with the trailer switch, and the real problem, it does not have a limit now, the trim up with take it up to the full up trailer position. I know I should take it back to the guy, but he kind had attitude about it when I stop by to ask him about this problem, saying up had all the interior out of the boat when he work on it, as I was installing new marine grade sound system, and figured it was easy for them as they said they would need to take interior out to do the work when I call him to get cost for job. The other problem is boat is at my vacation home, so I am not out there all the time, and the next few trips I want to enjoy the use of the boat, not leave it with the service guy. so if some could help, I hope it is just a adjustment and I can do it.

Thanks

Rich

Re: Trim Limit and Position switches adjustment Question

Hi Rich,

Your post is a little hard to read (in the future, you might put some breaks between the sentences to make it a little easier reading!)

It appears that the "mechanic" possibly didn't adjust the trim limit switch itself after installation.

It's a simple (make/break) switch that opens the "UP" circuit in the main trim circuit. (The "trailering" circuit switch is not affected because it bypasses the limit switch)

I can't believe someone would put it all back together and not test it and/or adjust it afterwards.

AND if he did, then you have an intermittent circuit problem (loose wire, shorting wire, broken connection or wiring error etc)

The OEM service manual does have the circuit diagram for the trim and the service manual outlines the procedure to adjust the trim limit switch.

If you want to DIY, you should probably obtain the manuals.

Regards,

Rick
