hey i have a 1987 mercruiser alpha one drive. im trying to replace the trim limit/senders and i get to the point where it goes through the transom.. i have two bolts holding it in as described in ling http://www.mercstuff.com/trima.htm at number 8 and number 1... it only shows one bolt. anyways i can only losen the bottom bolt. top bolt there isnt enough room to get a socket in there or wrench.. any ideas howto remove it? maybe needle nose vise grips is next option? im trying to avoid removing the gimble housing. thanks.

I got a 7/16" ring spanner, heated it up near the end and bent it to the shape I wanted.... That's my 'trim switch wire retainer bolt' special tool. :D:D:D

For us US guys, that means get a 7/16" box wrench, heat and bend the end so it will fit where you want it.

So, can the trim limit/sender wires be pulled through the transom by pulling the drive off and using a specially bent 7/16 box wrench to remove the retaining screws. I need to replace the trim senders but thought pulling the gimbal housing was absolutely necessary. Thanks

Correct... Just remove the screws, tie a bit of line onto the ends of the wires and pull them out from the back... Attach the line to the connector ends of the new senders and pull them back in... FOLLOW THE BOOK INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALIGNMENT OF THE HALVES TO THE LETTER.
