Trim limit switch question?

I have done a search for information about trim limit switches and have found some answers. I do still have a couple pf questions.

I have a 1989 Maxum 2000SR, Merc 305/230HP, Alpha one drive with power trim XD.

Thanks to everyone here I replaced the water impeller and water cover, which was leaking. I put the drive together and saw 2 things.

1. The trim limit switch wiring, port side, has the insulation deteriorated going in to the switch, wiring exposed. On the outside of the switch are the letters "T.L."
2. There is a hose, looks like a water hose, which comes form the transom and clamps on to the drive. The exposed rubber looks to be dry rotting so it will have to be replaced.

I am guessing the trim limit and sender switches will need to be replaced. I can see where the wiring runs through the transom. How difficult is it to run the wiring for the new switches?

My boat does not have a trim gauge, never had it. It looks like the sender wiring is part of the harness and runs to the dash (Merc wiring diagram). I tried to find a trim gauge for a 1989 but can only find gauges starting for years in the 90's. Do the years pre-90's not have trim gauges? Can I install a trim gauge?

The rubber hose, would that be the water supply hose? Can this hosed be replaced with the drive on? I could not find it in the sterndrive manual.

Sorry this is so long!

Thanks again for everyones help!:)

Re: Trim limit switch question?

Not sure what manual you was looking at, probably a Clymers or Seloc, but the OEM manual has that information.

At the link above scroll down to the manual outline and click on the section letter you want to view.
Sections 4A and/or 4B will detail the info on changing all those parts.

Hi Don S
Thats what I was looking for. I was looking in the OEM, just not in the right place.

Do you think I can use any alpha one trim gauge with the newer style trim sender?

Thanks again!

Yes you should be able to replace the water pick up line with the drive on. It attaches to the inner transom plate/ sheild. On my 185 there is barly any room to get your hands back in there and on my cruser pretty much NO room. But I think its possible if you can get to the hose clamp, you will need to be patient though as I can tell it would be a mother of a job!

The trim sender and limit switches are sold as a set so if your boat doesent have the gaauge it problaby does have the sender as you say it does.......I think ym cruser ( 1993 Ciera 2755 ) also didnt come with the gauge stock and mine was added. My trim gauge is NOT in my main cluster and is not the same style as the main gauges. For that reason I know you can add one to your boat.

Ayuh,......

The Odds are Great that the rest of the Rubber Parts are Also Rotten,+ need replacing as Well.......
Rather than just replacing the water hose,... You should be looking at replacing All the rubber parts,.....
All the Bellows, the water line, the lower shift cable ,it's bellows,+ the trim limit,+ sender switches......

I am with Bondo, its most likly time for transom shield maint. replacing the water hose is gonna be like replcing the exhaust bellows with the drive on.
technically possible I guess but not worth it.
remove the drive, remove the bellhousing and replace parts as nessasary, the trick is to replace the stuff BEFORE it breaks, its much cheaper that way.
about the only way to access the bolt that holds the sender wires to the transome is with the bell housing removed.
yes once when young and dumb I replaced the exhaust bellows on an alpha without drive removal nor the expander, only took about 8 hours, much skin loss and I made up more words than Bush.
last time I tried to outsmart the manual.

Thanks for all the replies.
I figured as much and have decided to just remove it and replace all the necessary rubber. About how long does this "normally" take? Being my first time I realize it will take longer. I have looked through the manual and figure I will be doing a good weekend job.

Till you get it done.
That job is a PITA at it's best, and can get worse. DO NOT try to set any false goals.

Thanks Don
I figured as much. Just like when I replaced my water impeller. I took my time to do it right. That's why I figured now is the best time up here since we have way to much snow on the ground and no visible water.
