Trim limit switch/sender

Hello, we have a 2000 Bayliner 1950 with a 3.0 Mercruiser engine.
We have a probably with the tilt, as the up button does not work. The trailer and down button both work, however.
We are really hoping that it's not the actual limit switch or sender. What should we check before replacing the switch/sender?
If it does turn out to be the switch or sender is there any way that we can fix that ourselves, without removing the drive?
Thank you in advance.

Re: Trim limit switch/sender

The sender & switch are 2 different items, the sender sends the outdrive position to the gauge, the switch controls when the trim UP shuts off, protecting you from running the engine and doing damage to the u-joints, bearings in the upper. etc.

Sometimes the arm inside the switch can get worn and break, they are replacable without replacing the entire switch. There are 2 arms, if 1 breaks, then the up wont work at all. You can check the continuity of the wire, but removing the cap and jumpering the wire on the inside and checking at the trim limit switch ( or reverse ) That would tell you if the wires/switch needs replacing in total.

hope this helps.

Ps.. If you do replace the switch, you can cut and splice the wires without removing the drive, just be sure to use heatshrink connections and tubing. ( not as clean but does the job )

Sorry, it is either the trim limit switch (port side) or the wiring to the connector. Look in the back for two black wires going into a connector with a purple/white and two blue/white wires. Unplug and jumper from one side of the connector to the other. Try trim. If it works you have isolated the problem. As Kainon says, your contact arm is not contacting the conductive strip in the switch, or the wires are broken.

I have the same year 2150 bayliner. Make sure you take apart your shifter and look behind it. WE had the problem of that wire assy rubbing thru 2 times already.

Our prob was no trim up but had to use the trailer as the trim. Trim down worked fine. I think the wire you want is a purple and black. I think your shifter should be the 3000.

you can repair the wire then over tape it. In the future you will know the problem and the fix. use a screw driver to pop off the logo, then a socket to remover the nut. then take out the screw(s) I think you will be able to see the probelm. I went through 2 of them in about 5 years of daily boating from a lot of wakeboarding so it was heavy use. Now if it were to happen (which it has not since I over insulated the wire about 5 years) I can fix it pretty quick.

Try Jumper on plug first (easiest thing to check), if Trim does not work with jumper, badognobisc could have it nailed.
