trim limit wiring question

Is there any way to take advantage of the trim limit sender with only a up down switch? I guess the switch I have would be considered a " momentary" type switch, where it remains in the center and can be pressed up or down to complete either of two cercuits. It is about an inch wide and an inch and a quarter tall. ( rocker type of thing) I have looked at the wiring diagram for the stock three button switch, which has the additional switch for trailering ( which I dont have) for getting the drive fullly out. I would like to add an additional switch but I would be at a loss as to how to wire it. Can someone please give me a diagram or explain how it would work with a seperate trailer switch. For example I could add a simple push button switch right next to the up down one I currently have Without re-doing the whole dash pannel. Part of the problem is when I look at the factory diagram i have trouble understanding how it works. I remember, from other boats I have used, to trailer you need to hold two buttons at once. so that is where I get confused when looking at the diagram.

I priced out the factory three button switch and they want huge money for it but more importantly, it would require big mods to the dash board to make it fit. As it is right now I can raise or lower the drive with no limit at all. I just installed a new trimlimit sender and I am sure the old one was by-passed by the previous owner. so I have the new wires sitting in the engine bay waiting to be hooked to somthing.

By the way, as it is now, will the outdrive just keep going up or down without any limit at all? I havent tried as I dont want to break anything. Does the pump have built in limits? I appoligise for the length of this post just trying to give as much detail as I can.

what do you currently have (doesn't sound stock), how is it wired, and what exactly is the issue you're having?

I currently have a marine rocker type switch which is not stock. It is wired to the solinoids to give me up or down. Thats it. It works great but with no limit at all . I know I can learn by using the trim guage, where things are, but that does not give me much cumfort if my wife is using the boat or someone else. I can here the u-joints breaking now.

Easy! Sorry I screwed up there Do you want a trim switch that is limited? Is there a switch on your control handle?

All you have to do is run the up button from the trim switch wiring, through the trim limit switch then to the solenoid.
Run a seperate momentary switch and wire from the helm to the up solenoid for trailer up.

The pumps I ever worked on have a bypass relief valve built in. Whether trimed down or all the way up fhe fluid will bypass the unit and return to the resevoir. You can actually hear it. As for the switch, we once used a SPDT momentary switch from a local marine store and she is still in use. I would follow the other post replies on proper method of wiring the trailer switch. You should end up at the switch with 3 wires. 12v pos, up, down.

Don. Thanks so very much !!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant tell you how much that drawing means. You da man. two questions tho. Just so I understand. The trailer switch by-passes the trim limit switch and allows me to trim up to trailer mode correct? But what stops the outdrive from going up so high it rips the bellows or hits the transom or ............. And what stops the outdrive from going in too much? Does it matter which wires on the limit switch go where?

The trim cylinders are only so long. Once they get to the end of the stroke, it can't go any further.

no, but verify that the switch is working before you go nuts. there should be continuity between the wires with the drive down, but not with it up. if your switch is toast, it probably isn't worth replacing unless you need to do other transom work...(although you may be able to do a half-assed repair like i did)

That depends on if you have little colored sleeves on the ends of your trim limit switch wires or not. If you do, they would be like this.

That depends on if you have little colored sleeves on the ends of your trim limit switch wires or not. If you do, they would be like this.

how would that make a difference on the wiring? it's just basically a SPST switch...either on or off. other than presumably the "14" wiring is also purple, and the "15" is also blue.

I don't know, I didn't design it. Like I said IF he has the sleeves, I showed him how the wiring was supposed to be.

hey all . Got momentary push button all wired up and works like a dream, ( 25 buks for a sealed one YIKES) . trim limit stops at 21 and three quarters of an inch. All I need to do is put a timing light on this engine and I am boating.
