Trim motor clicks

I recently bought a 1979 glasstron with a 1977 mercury 1150 outboard. The trim motor would run but nothing would happen. Come to find out there is a manual lock. After trying to move it up and down with the lock on it now just clicks, but only when moving the switch up. When switching down nothing happens at all. I’m wondering if there is a fuse that blew or if I just toasted the motor itself. Any input would be great!

That motor will have a hydraulic release on the PTT pump control valve. Turn it left (CCW) to lock it.

The "dog ear" tilt locks can get in the way. They are on the midsection. Make sure they fold down.

Non PTT motors have a reverse lock. There is a rod that rides on the shift shaft cam in the gearcase. You should not have one, unless the conversion to PTT was done by an amateur.

Your PTT likely has a single solenoid for up and a heavy switch and wiring for down.

There may be a fuse or circuit breaker. I cannot remember. It will be on the PTT unit itself.

One more thing...The PTT motor has a bi-metal overload (circuit breaker) inside the casing. They can get a bit of dirt in them. You can clean it and maybe the motor will start to work.

Being a 1979 you should have 2 solenoids. If it turns out you have only one I'll post the other

OK, use this one
If all else fails you can change from 1 to 2 solenoids if needed later

So the motor was manually locked and you tried to trim it. Now the solenoid clicks and the motor will not run.

I would check the fuse (if it has one) on the PTT pump/reservoir, although I would be surprised if the motor was fused and the solenoid was fused separately or not at all.

More likely either the motor is bad or the bimetal circuit breaker has some dirt or is broken.
