Trim motor doesn?t stop in the lowest position. Is this normal?

I suspect that my tilt/trim system does not work correctly. I am not sure how it should be, thus, I am asking this question.

So, the amplitude of motion of the outdrive unit is OK. It goes all the way down and goes up far enough. When I use the ?trailer? button, it goes all the way up. No problem. When the unit reaches its final position going up the motor stops (no sound) even if I continue holding the button ?up?. This makes sense to me. However, I noticed that if the unit reaches its final position going down and I keep holding the button ?down? the motor continues pumping (making some kind of sound). The sound clearly changes when the unit reaches the lowest position (this tells me it is in the lowest position) and I normally release the button, but now I think, shouldn?t the trim motor switch of automatically when the unit is in its lowest position? This is what worries me. What is broken? How to repair?

On the trailer or on the water with engine ?off? I can hear the change in the sound the tilt/trim motor makes and this tells me that the outdrive is in the lowest position (and I release the ?down? button), but when engine is running I can?t tell. So, basically, I suspect that I keep pumping extra and start worrying that this may damage the motor or the pump one day.

The engine is 1993 4.3LX/V6 Alpha One Thunderbolt Ignition, serial number OF0244564. The transom is OF058634. The drive is OD886515.

The trim motor continues running even after it reaches either full up or full down. If the trim pump is turning off, it could be your trim limit switch is way out of adjustment and you are in fact using the trim button for trailering instead the trailer button.

when the trim is down fluid can bypass thru the trim cyl when all the way up it cannot....this is normal, why arent you using a trim gauge then it wouldnt matter if the motor was running

i think what hes saying is when the drive is dowm if you hit the trim button you ca hear the motor run even though the trim is down. when the drive is all the up on its travel the motor stops(stalls)

No problem with engine.

I think now I got the info I needed and this situation has cleared up. I cant really use the gage near the lowest position of the outdrive because the gage is not accurate in that range (for whatever reason). But this is another story, I believe.

Yes. And down, when it hits full down, the tone changes, which is definitely normal.

Thats normal (exactly what mine does). The sender for the trim gauage is located on the side of the gimbal housing (where it rocks up and down when you raise/lower the drive). They're really (really!) easy to adjust, which will make your gauge work and you won't have to strain your ears.

One side has the "trim limit" switch. That tells adjusts how high the trim buttons will lift (the trailer switch bypasses this).

The other side has the "trim sender", which is what makes the gauge work.
