Trim Motor Problem!

For some reason I cannot lower my propeller. It?s in the up position and cannot go down. The trim motor can be heard running when I press the ?down? button. Nothing happens when I press the ?up? button or the ?up/down? button. Before I added the oil, the up button would make the trim motor run but nothing would happen. I have checked the oil in the trim motor and added more into it. I checked if it ran down to the tubes that connect to the propeller and there are four tubes. Two of them got oil running through them in a constant stream while two of them are getting drop?.per drop?.. per drop. The trim motor seems to be running; I guess it?s the connection. I did find an electrical wire that is connected to the trim motor on one side but not connect on the other. Maybe that wire is the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated as always. Thank you.

Moving to IO forum.
Now, go up to the Adults only stick at the top of this forum and download the service manual for your engine and drive. #2 should be the manual for you.
Before we get to carried away with troubleshooting, if you can hear the motor running, it's not electrical. Since it's probably been stored in the up position and probably pressurized up, I would find a large person to bounce on the sterndrive while someone is holding the trim switch in the down position. Many times they get stuck up from being that way under pressure.

Next time you put the drive up, hit the down button for a second to release the pressure, and it should prevent that from happening again.

Depending on what button your pressing 2 lines will have pressure, was
the drive stored in the up position? check the diagram in the manual that can be found in the "adults only section for you system.

Re: Trim Motor Problem!

That's the wrong manual for his drive BT, it only goes back to 83.
He has a slightly different system and needs manual #2 as I mentioned earlier.

PS: Save the manual to your computer, don't print it all. Especially manual #2. That is 835 pages, most of which you won't need for your setup.

Re: Trim Motor Problem!

UPDATE: I did what you told me Don. I had a "heavy" friend push on the stern drive to lower it. After he helped it down about halfway; he didn't need to continue pushing it, the motor was doing the job. BUT, now i have another problem. Whenever i push the "UP" button, NOTHING happens. The trim motor is not making a sound. I tried checking the wires and there is so many of them  I looked at the manual you gave suggested Don and the wiring diagram for the trim motor and stern drive is missing. I guess the person forgot to scan the pages or something.

Let me recap really fast. The stern drive is in the "DOWN" position. Whenever i press the "UP" button nothing happens. The trim motor dose not make a sound. I checked the wires and one was disconnected but i have no idea where it leads. The manual doesn't have a wire diagram.

Thanks so much to all those who helped with all my problems. I'm seeing a lot of progress.

Re: Trim Motor Problem!

After researching the manual provided by you helpful people :) i have found the wire diagram. I just wanted to update you guys. After i finish my exams, Friday, I will take a look at the wires that are running from the Trim Motor to the controls. I hope that the wires haven't been changed and that they are in the same color as the manual diagram shows them to be. Anyway, ill keep you guys updated. Thanks for the help.

Re: Trim Motor Problem!

I wanted to update all of you who helped and read up on this situation. I fixed the problem.

1st. I checked all the wires according to the diagram. Everything seemed fine. A black wire wise cut that ran from the control box to the trim motor, which i reconnected.

2nd. Chacked the "up" solenoid for 13 bucks at Advanced auto parts. The old one didn't seem to be working properlly.

I did those two things and everything worked fine.

To recap the solution:

1. Had a "heavier" person step on the top of the stern drive (Read post above by Don S)

2. Checked the wires according to the wire diagram found in the manual. Reconnected a loose wire.

3. Checked both Solenoids and ended up changing one.

Fixed the problem. ;)

Thank you everyone for all the help.
