trim motor problem

1987 mercury 45 hp (classic fifty) trim doesn't work, just clicks. anybody have an idea whats wrong or how to fix?

Sounds like the trim motor is locked up,maybe from water leakage or just age unless the battery is low.
I had the same problem once,used a small hammer to jar the trim motor while at the same time working the trim switch.I later replaced the motor.

hot wire the motor straight to a battery. if it doesn't spin then motor is bad. if it does spin then it is in the switch or relays.

Do the hot wire test then if no go take it apart (nothing to lose there) and check for wornout/sticking brushesPT-motor.jpg and dirty armature. The brushes are still available and easy to replace.
