So my trim is a 3 button trim. I used to be able to trim down and trailer up, but the trim up didn't work. Now I only have trailer up the down quit working. I installed a new solinoid and if I jumper it it will go up but when I jumper down it just sparks. My trim system only has one solenoid and is from a 73 mercruiser 165

So you are jumping 12 v to grn/white wire and getting sparks?! There should only be 2 wires at the plastic terminal connector. 1 from switch & 1 to the motor. Disconnect them and just flash touch either wire. Sparks on pump side means new brush plate. And probably atleast armature clean up. Sparks on switch side means wiring issues.

Yea that is correct. I did just put new brushes on. Would I need a new commutator plate to get new brush plates?

Did the problem start after you put the new brushes in, or did you put the new brushes in because it was not working? How were the old brushes?

I put new brushes in cause the old ones were worn right out and the trim quit working all together. Now it works in trailer up and that is it

Better revisit the brush plate. The motor goes both ways and if you can go up but get sparks down, there is ground issue at cap.
