Wire burned into two pieces and reconnected and still have no activity on trim buttons when pushed. Looked for fuses and do not see any. Any troubleshooting ideas?

Should we just guess at what you are working on?

Don't hold it down!

Don't hold it down!

I have a chaparral with a volvo-penta engine. I broke the trim once because I held it up for too long:(. I ran into some shallow water and I saw some mud getting kicked up from the prop. I got scared about accidently chipping the prop, because I had done this before. I held the trim up for too long and I think it had something to do with a fuse- but regardless it's not a good idea to hold it down for too long.

Best of luck on your trim-

Re: Trim Not Working

I know what you mean. The main power cable to the trim motor burned in two after backing off a sand bar. I raised the trim up and backed off the sand bar and after returning in I noticed the main wire was burned in two and after reconnecting still have no trim. I connected a hot wire to bypass the burned in two wire and still nothing. Someone told me that you should not raise the stern and backup and maybe that caused by problem???

I'm not understanding you. Are you saying you put it in reverse and engaged the prop while the outdrive was in the fully up position? I can't think of any way to "back off a sand bar" using the motor. I usually push off until it's deep enough to run the motor.

No offense to you, but I have seen people in shallow water trying to make the boat go backwards by running the prop parallel to the surface of the water. Is that what do you mean by "raising the stern"?, 'cause that's all that happens if you run it backward with the outdrive raised.

Re: Trim Not Working

I was stuck in the middle of a channel, bottom in sand, prop in sand, after trying to pull off by another boat with no luck. I was stuck for sure. I called the guy who owned the boat and he told me that this boat will back off of anything like a helicopter. He told me to raise the stern and back toward the main channel. And low and behold the backend raised up and slid off pretty as you please. So now that is the story, so now you r telling me I messed up things huh??

I thought I had, what more info do you need? Hot wire to trim motor split and two Selinoids one for up and one for down. I may be describing wrong but that is why I am asking ya'll folks, you are the experts not me. When I press the up or down or both up buttons no movement and I have looked for fuses or relays and can not find any. Ran a new hot wire. So????????

Re: Trim Not Working

The boat I am working on is 1982 26' Searay Sundancer, 350 Merc 260hp and the trim motor is positioned halfway between left trim tab motor in engine compartment on left side by engine if you are facing stern, have been told I have a Bravo drive with an Alpha case and have found no one that can tell me anything but the guy who I purchased from and he is the one who told me this info about stern.

Hopeless I tell ya, pure hopeless.

We need to know what make and model drive. OMC, Mercruiser, Volvo, what year since wiring, and types of trim pumps change from year to year.

You better take some pictures.
Neither the Alpha drive, nor the Bravo drives were invented in 82, there were Mercruiser One drives, that looked similar to the Alpha I drives. But there is nothing on any Alpha outdrive that will bolt to a Bravo.

Talking to the previous owner, he stated that is was a bravo and it had Alpha emblems on it. I will look for some s/n's and get back with ya'll. The GM 350 is original but I am not sure about the rest. Just purchased 3 months ago, so excuse my not knowing what's on the boat. I appreciate all the help.
