Trim not working

My 80 26ft sea ray has the tilt for the motor and trim tabs. The left trim tab makes a noise when activated but does not move. When the right trim tab is activated the left trim tab makes a noise and does not move. The motor tilt does not work at all.
I will start by looking at fuses but are there any other ideas to work on?

Re: Trim not working

I think you would get a lot more help if you told us what brand and type of trim tabs you have.
Also what brand and model of motor you have.
Is it an I/O or a outboard.

Also I think the Trim tab problem you would get more help in the electirc and electronics.
Motor tilt problem could go there also or in the brand of motor.

Re: Trim not working

There's a big difference between troubleshooting a lenco or bennett tab system... More info needed.

Re: Trim not working

Hi redeye,

I've the same problem on my honda bf90, the trim makes nois but dont works, the problem with mine is the trim is leaking fluid from the hidraulic, if isnt an electrical problem, its probably the fluid, and to solve the problem is needed to refill the fluid tank with ATF fluid.

Re: Trim not working

Are the tabs electric or hydraulic? Are there wires running to the rams or a tube?

Re: Trim not working

ok so here is the update. It is a hydrolic pump and it sounds like it may need fluid. The problem is I need to find where to fill it.
I also figured out the engine trim has another button on the shifter that needs to be pushed to get the engine to trim up.

I figured out where my water leak is coming from. That worn out water heater..................it is as good as gone. I need to bypass the water hoses from the engine and may make a plug for the back with the wire. The hoses that are running back there can make a nice wash area for the deck. ;)

Re: Trim not working

If your trim tabs are Bennett this may help.

If the image shows them check your unit. if it looks like this them likely bennett.
The fluid should be filled to the label on the front with the trim tabs in up position.

1 Clear white plastic resovore. Fill to the level line of the label on the front. Fluid should be pretty level in the tank. If the boat is level and the fluid in the tank is not then you may need to shimm the entire assembly later.

To fill remove screw 7 on the top and remove cover 6 by lifting up.
Remove plug 4 and fill with automatic transmission fluid.

Run the tabs down and up several times and recheck the level with the tabs up.

For the unit to work good you must have a charged battery or the motor running and proper size wireing.

If you have control type 37 or 38 then know you can not raise one tab while lowering the other. The motor runs foward to lower one or both tabs and backward to raise one or both tabs. Since the motor can not run foward and backwards at the same time you can not raise one side at the same time you are lowering the other side.

If it looks like this and still does not work then there is a lot more troubling that can be done. Sense is is very long I do not want to post unless you need it.

Re: Trim not working

Did both systems fail at the same time? If so I'd say check the simple things like the battery connections and all elec junctions feeding the system.

My tilt motor on my Evinrude just stopped working one day. The relays would make noise and click but the motor wouldn't budge. I cleaned my batt terminals and everything fired right up. Seems like the relay was getting some juice but not enough to engage the motor.

hope this helps

Re: Trim not working

ok so I put some transmission fluid in what appeared to be a reservoir and started messing with the trims. They sounded different than before so they may be working. I will fill the rest of the reservoir and test them again.
